Rail Europe Peak Season Sales Exceeds Market Trend For European Travel
Rail Europe reports sales in the past five months increased at a rate that far exceeds that of North American travel to Europe in the same period.  In some peak season months Rail Europe’s sales growth – comparing 2006 revenues to the same months last year – were double the trend, as reported by the European Travel Commission.  Rail Europe is the largest North American supplier of European rail passes and tickets, owned by the French National Railroads (SNCF) and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and celebrating its 75th year of operations in North America.  “This is the first time that European rail is growing faster than the market,” stated Fabrice Morel, President and CEO of Rail Europe.
In May this year, Rail Europe’s sales were 14 percent higher than May 2005, while North American travel to Europe in May was up just 6.9 percent.  In June Rail Europe saw an 11 percent increase over June 2005, and the ETC reported an overall 7.7 percent growth rate.  July, August and September sales for Rail Europe were up 7 percent, 10 percent and 6 percent, respectively over the same months last year.   Sales figures include rail passes and point-to-point tickets for both individual travelers and groups of ten or more.
While these sales figures include transactions made via the company’s website (www.raileurope.com) and call center, year-to-date website sales have increased 30 percent over the same period last year.  Morel attributes the surge in sales to a series of improvements the company has made to its website. “This spring we implemented a connection to European databases of train schedules and fares, which has given us the widest selection of prices and routes of any North American supplier – quite simply no one else sells as much as we do,” said Morel.  “In addition, we introduced simplified pricing of point-to-point tickets to make it easier for travelers to find the type of ticket they need.  And we jazzed up the site with virtual rail tours and a very dynamic look.”
Product categories with exceptionally strong growth year-to-date for Rail Europe are: single-country rail passes (such as the France Railpass, Swiss Pass, German Railpass) up 14 percent over last year; deluxe high-speed trains, such as Thalys (Paris-Brussels-Amsterdam-Cologne) and AVE (Madrid-Cordoba-Seville) up 20 percent; and French point-to-point tickets – up 49 percent over last year.  “This year, we were able to start selling French market-priced tickets, including advance purchase fares, many of which are priced 30-40 percent below standard fares,” added Morel. “This plus the broader range of fares and schedules and simplified ticket pricing were the main factors that fueled our strong peak season sales.”
Morel also noted that the company is refocusing on its core rail products, recently spinning off its non-rail business units (Avanti Destinations tour products and DER rental car and air consolidator operations) and dropping tour, air and land from its Groups division.  Rosemont, Illinois is still home to Rail Europe’s rail-only call center, while DER non-rail and all Avanti products are handled out of Avanti’s Portland, Oregon, office.

Amtrak Adds Service This Fall
Increased Acela Express service between Washington, New York and Boston, faster, more frequent Keystone Service between Harrisburg and Philadelphia, Pa., and more state-supported service to and from Chicago highlight Amtrak’s new fall timetable, effective October 30, 2006.
Available in stations and by mail now, the new timetable contains train schedules, sample fares and practical information for making reservations and purchasing tickets.
Northeast and Keystone Corridor improvements
The popular Acela Express service will offer additional frequencies between Washington, New York and Boston. Round-trips between Washington and New York will increase from 14 to 15, with on-the-hour departures from D.C. beginning at 5:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., and from New York to Washington, the Acela will run on-the-hour between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. and at 8:15 p.m. (adjusted to accommodate Metro North schedule).
A two-hour and 45-minute trip will also be available on virtually every Acela Express train between Washington and New York. The five-minute improvement from the existing schedule is possible because of track improvements.
New Keystone Service In Pennsylvania
Amtrak and the Pennsylvania State Department of Transportation joined forces this year to make considerable infrastructure improvements to the Keystone Corridor.  As a result, the new Keystone Service will feature faster travel times with more frequencies between Harrisburg and Philadelphia. With trains traveling at speeds up to 110 mph, most trip times will be reduced by 15 – 30 minutes off the current two-hour trip.  Weekday round-trips will increase from 11 to 14, with 10 trains traveling through to New Your City.  Weekend trips are also increasing between Harrisburg and Philadelphia and through to New York.  These improvements make the service not only faster than driving, but more convenient and reliable.
Change in Downeaster service
The Downeaster service, which operates between Portland, Maine, and Boston will operate earlier, effective October 30.  Working in cooperation with the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, Train 687, the late-evening train will revert to its winter schedule, operating five hours earlier with a departure from Boston (at time) to Portland (arriving at time). All other weekday trains will operate 30-80 minutes earlier with the new timetable. Finally, the last train out of Portland will depart three hours earlier (at 3:40 p.m.).
Central U.S. schedule improvements
Amtrak and the Illinois DOT previously announced an additional four round-trip trains will operate between Chicago and downstate Illinois, with two additional frequencies to and from St. Louis and one each to and from Carbondale and to and from Quincy.            Resulting frequencies will be five round-trips between Chicago and St. Louis, along with two round-trips between Chicago and Carbondale and two round-trips between Chicago and Quincy.
Other schedule improvements include two-hour earlier departure times from Chicago for eastbound trains on the Hoosier State/Cardinal routes to Indianapolis and on to Cincinnati; Huntington, West Virginia; Washington and New York. The eastbound Capitol Limited will operate 90-minutes later from Chicago (7:05 p.m.) to Toledo (11:59 a.m.), Cleveland (2:15 a.m.), Pittsburgh (5:45 a.m.) and Washington (1:30 p.m.).
Also, the Texas Eagle will originate an hour earlier from San Antonio at 7:00 a.m. on its route to Chicago through Texas and Arkansas.
Western Region improvements
Amtrak Cascades in the Pacific Northwest added a fourth round trip between Seattle and Portland in July.  This mid-day frequency provides passengers with more choices and flexibility when planning trips between the two major cities.
In Northern California, Amtrak Capitol Corridor service recently expanded from 12 daily round trips to 16 daily round trips between Sacramento and San Jose expanded. This is the largest expansion in the history of the service.
For schedules, fares and information, passengers may call 800-USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak.com.

Rail Europe Announces Exclusive France Rail Day Pass For Daytripping
For anyone going to Paris but interested in a quick and easy break in another French city or town, Rail Europe announces the availability through December 31 of a special  France Rail Day Pass good for one day of travel throughout France,  priced at $129 US/$168 CAD (1st class) or $90 US/$117 CAD (2nd class).  Or fly straight to another French city and make Paris a daytrip.
This product is available only from Rail Europe and must be purchased before departure from North America.  Travel can take place up to 6 months after purchase, so the Day Pass can be used as late as June of 2007.
The special Day Pass plus France’s extensive, high-speed rail network of TGVs* make it easy and affordable to travel back and forth from the broad boulevards, glamour and excitement of Paris to a completely different place in a short time.  Consider the following daytrip destinations, all offering frequent, rapid train service:
- Lyon – go for the unique hearty cuisine of Lyon’s typical bouchon restaurants and the charm of vieux Lyon -- the home to Italian silk merchants in Renaissance times and today a magnificent textile museum.  The trip to Lyon takes 2 hours from Paris, with over 30 trains running daily in each direction.
- Lille – head north to this city whose medieval Flemish heritage is alive and well.  The birthplace of Charles de Gaulle, Lille charms with the cobblestone squares, colorful architecture, narrow, winding streets of the Old Town, flea markets and Musée des Beaux Arts, second largest museum in France after the Louvre. The trip to Lille takes just 1 hour from Paris with 25 daily departures in each direction.
-Dijon – The capital of Burgundy, which in medieval times was a Dukedom that controlled Flanders and was far more powerful than the then-puny kingdom of France.  Known for its mustard, Flemish style architecture and the Pinot Noir grape grown in surrounding vineyards.  1 hour 20 minutes from Paris with 15 trains departing daily in each direction.
-Nantes – the former capital of Brittany, Nantes is also the birthplace of Jules Vernes.  See both the medieval Old Town (Chateau des Ducs with its ramparts and water-filled moat) and the 19th century town (most notably the elegant Passage Pommeraye with shops on several levels, mentioned by Flaubert). The trip from Paris takes just 2 hours, with 15 departures daily in either direction.
- Tours -  in the heart of the scenic Loire Valley and its many sumptuous chateaux, Tours is a fascinating town itself. See the atmospheric pedestrian Place Plumereau, half-timbered houses, Romanesque Tour Charlemagne (all that remains of a 4th c. church). Rent a car or take a bus to see the chateaux.  Tours is 1 hour 10 minutes from Paris (TGVs go to St. Pierre-des-Corps – with shuttles going to Tours), and 18 trains depart daily in each direction.
-Reims – visit the capital of the Champagne region and its magnificent cathedral where every French king was crowned.  Tour the vineyards or just spend the rest of your day sampling lots of bubbly – with a train you don’t have to worry about a designated driver.  It takes just 1 hr 30 min from Paris with 15 departures in each direction daily.
-Avignon - in just 2 hrs 40 min you can be all the way in Provence, see the ruins of the famous bridge, stroll along extensive medieval city walls and tour the superb Papal Palace that was home to pontiffs, and the richest court in Europe, during the 14th century.  Buy something made from colorful Provencal fabrics to take home.  9 trains depart daily in each direction.
Add another daytrip to London or Brussels
For those who fancy a short break from France altogether during their Paris vacation, Rail Europe also offers economical daytrip fares to London, via the high-speed Eurostar train, and to Brussels, via the high-speed Thalys train. The Brussels of divine chocolate, beer, mussels and the first Art Nouveau buildings is just 85 minutes from Paris on Thalys.  Thalys roundtrip fares from Paris start at $96 US/$110 CAD (2nd class).  There are 25 Thalys trains departing daily in each direction between Paris and Brussels.
Or take an early morning Eurostar train from Paris Gare du Nord for as little as $ 96 US/$110 CAD daytrip (standard/2nd class) and spend a very proper English day in London, returning back to Paris for a late night Cognac.  In 1st class you can start the day with an English breakfast onboard the train (or a Continental breakfast if you prefer) – both come with champagne to celebrate your getaway.  Once in London, there is a vast array of sightseeing/shopping/cultural and dining possibilities, such as Big Ben, Parliament, Harrods, Covent Gardens, the Tate Modern, the British Museum or Buckingham Palace.  Stay for high tea and take the train back to Paris.  The trip to London takes just 2 hrs, 35 min – but going to London you gain an hour because of the time difference.  Eurostar has 14 departures daily in each direction.
Owned in part by the French National Railroads (SNCF), Rail Europe is the leading North American distributor of European rail passes and tickets for travel in more than 30 countries.  More than 1 million North Americans, including both independent and group travelers, see Europe using Rail Europe products.
For more information about this special France Rail Day Pass, Eurostar, Thalys or any other train in Europe and the U.K, consult a travel agent or log on to www.raileurope.com  (U.S.) or www.raileurope.ca  (Canada) or call 1-888-382-7245 (U.S.) or 1-800-361-7245 (Canada).

Additionally, two industry veterans have been named to key management posts for the $120 million hotel project, now nearing completion. The hotel's extensive acquisition, historic renovation and construction process was spearheaded by developer Richard Friedman, president and chief executive officer of Cambridge-based Carpenter & Company.
The Liberty Hotel is perfectly situated in the heart of Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood near the world's best medical complexes. Just a footbridge away from the Charles River and its Esplanade, The Liberty Hotel offers easy access to a wealth of outdoor recreation, unique shopping, entertainment and downtown Boston.

Among the dramatic features being preserved are historic catwalks linking public spaces, vestiges of jail cells within the hotel lobby bar and magnificent, oversized windows.
The Liberty Hotel, when complete, will comprise 300 guestrooms, including 10 incomparable suites with dramatic river views; three distinctive venues for dining and cocktails; 6,000 sq. ft. of flexible meeting space within the original, historic structure; and a newly-constructed 16-story wing.

Chef Lee took the helm of Gilt in early September with the introduction of a Bar and Lounge menu and a limited, interim menu for the dining room. The Bar and Lounge menu, which was the first of its kind for Gilt, has been well received and will remain in place. Chef Lee's original creation, The Tuna Wellington—yellow fin tuna baked in puff pastry with porcini mushrooms and mustard greens, served with red wine reduction and foie gras sauce—has been selected as Gilt's signature dish. The rest of the dining room menu will change along with the seasons.
Gilt is the New York Palace’s new restaurant that replaced Le Cirque after the restaurant moved to a new location in the Bloomberg Building on East 58th Street a year ago.

Asia Transpacific Journeys Explores Cultures Still Close To Stone Age Roots
Some of the last discoveries of human communities were made in Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the 1930s. At the time of first contact, the tribes were living in thriving Stone Age agricultural communities and believed they were the only people on earth. Though some things have changed on this island in the past 70 years, many have not.
Asia Transpacific Journeys (ATJ) announces a new itinerary called Papua New Guinea—Island in the Clouds, that features the Tumbuna Sing-Sing. The departure is May 20, 2007. This is an intensive 16-day journey through a wildly diverse land with hundreds of distinct tribes speaking mutually unintelligible languages (850 distinct tongues have been documented). These people still cultivate yam and taro, scavenge the forest for edible fruits and animals, and live in symbiosis with their livestock (women are known to suckle piglets). Join the locals in celebrating the spectacular Tumbuna Sing-Sing. “Tumbuna” means “ancestors” in Tok Pisin (the lingua franca of Papua New Guinea). This sing-sing celebrates “Taim Bilong Tumbuna” (the time that belonged to the indigenous people, i.e. pre-European contact.)
The land cost of $7,395 per person (double) includes Papua New Guinea’s best eco-lodges, expert tour leadership, most meals including local beer, medical and evacuation insurance and more. Single supplements are $1,200. International airfare and internal airfare is additional.
Guests fly from Port Moresby to four PNG destinations in this mountainous country. There is also a three-night cruise on the legendary Sepik River, home to the remote tribal Sepik people famous for their complex ancestor cults, rich artistic tradition and their extraordinary ceremonial houses known as haus tambaran.
Asia Transpacific Journeys has been crafting private Custom Journeys and Small Group Trips to the Asia/Pacific region since 1987.  For 2007 ATJ’s ever-expanding itineraries of Small Group Trips and Custom Journeys encompasses 20 countries in North Asia, South Asia, SE Asia and the Pacific. Some trips also support global conservation and cultural preservation. ATJ’s own non-profit Asia Transpacific Foundation, established in 1998, works with rural Asian communities to provide clean drinking water through locally made ceramic water filters.  For more information please see www.asiatranspacific.com  or call toll free 800-642-2742.
