Where Does The Tour de France Begin?
Good question. Most replies would say “France.’’ The Tour de France, while integral to French culture, has always been more than simply a French affair. Each year the first leg of the event starts somewhere different, either in France or another country reflecting the broad appeal of the Tour. In 2006 it was in Strasbourg, France but the year before it was Liege, Belgium. In 2007 it is coming to London and Kent.
The race begins in London on July 6 with a 4.9 mile time trial that starts at Trafalgar Square, passes Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace. The following day, Stage One will take the riders past other important historic sites in the city and into the countryside before it finishes in Canterbury. Anyone who wishes to have a good viewing position for these trial runs should visit www.tourdefrancelondon.com.
Once the first stage of the tour de France is completed, the racers will have to bike more than 2000 miles back to France via a circuitous route to arrive in Paris by July 29 for the end of the race. More information available at the bilingual website for the Tour at http://www.letour.fr/indexus.html.

The New York Palace Hotel Unveils The Mansion Rooms
The New York Palace Hotel, a landmark luxury property located in the heart of Manhattan on the corner of 50th & Madison, announced the completion of The Mansion Rooms, a 17-month, $12 million public space renovation project. The new 13,000 square-foot venue, luxuriously situated over the fourth and fifth floors of the hotel's famed Villard Mansion, includes seven classically designed rooms with natural light and spacious foyers overlooking The Madison Avenue Courtyard.
Originally designed in 1882 by Stanford White and the firm of McKim, Mead & White, The Villard Mansion was seamlessly blended into the construction of a 55-story hotel tower in 1978 and has served as the entranceway to The Palace since the hotel opened its doors in 1980. This new space, developed for social and corporate events such as weddings and investor conferences, is located directly upstairs from GILT, The New York Palace Hotel's critically acclaimed New American restaurant. Prior to the renovation, the floors were used as private office space.
Overlooking 50th Street from the fifth floor is The Henry Room. A quintessential self-made man, Henry Villard’s profound belief in American ideals led him to success as an abolitionist, journalist, railroad baron, philanthropist, and the creative force behind one of the finest residences in New York City. Created amidst the excitement of the Gilded Age, The Villard Mansion today has the rare distinction of both exterior and interior landmark status. To honor the legacy of this revered space, the Mansion Rooms have been named after individuals who played an integral role in the evolution of the building, along with Henry Villard. These include:
The Edison Room—Named after Thomas Alva Edison, the famed American inventor and a business partner of Villard.
he Garrison Room—Named after William Lloyd Garrison, an outspoken abolitionist and the father-in-law of Villard.
The Rutherford Room—Named after William Rutherford Mead, an architect and founding partner of McKim, Mead & White.
The Roswell Room—Named after Roswell Smith, an original Villard resident, noted publisher and outspoken abolitionist.
The Louis Room—Named after Louis Comfort Tiffany, the renowned Art Nouveau stained glass artist.
The Stanford Room—Named after Stanford White, an architect and founding partner of McKim, Mead & White and noted for his architectural designs of landmark NYC buildings and churches.
With the completion of The Mansion Rooms renovation, The New York Palace now has 24 rooms for meetings and special events. These venues include The Library, The Drawing Room, The Chairman's Office, The Reid Salon, and The Villard Ballroom. The event space of The New York Palace Hotel is available for private site tours. Air Travel News & Offers
US Air Transport Forecasts Record 290 Million Passengers
The Air Transport Association (ATA) summer passenger traffic forecasts, and urged passengers to plan ahead for an optimal travel experience. The summer traffic forecast for the months of June through August anticipates approximately 209 million passengers, an increase of 3.0 percent over the same three-month period in the previous year. With a record number of passengers expected to fly this summer, the airlines are maximizing their efforts to ensure that operations run smoothly for our customers. But passengers can also help by planning ahead, using online check-in before they get to the airport and arriving at the airport early," said ATA President and CEO James C. May.
May added, "It's important to remember that smooth operations are not solely in airlines' hands. Weather plays a role. Furthermore, the current air traffic control system, which is vital to getting vacationers to and from their destinations efficiently, is straining to meet current demand. Without a rapid transition to an information-centric satellite-based system, the threat of gridlock continues to grow. Congress and the administration can do their part by supporting an aggressive modernization program and simultaneously adopting a funding scheme in which corporate jets, not just commercial airline passengers, are expected to provide system funding."
With hundreds of millions of passengers expected this summer, ATA recommends passengers allow plenty of time for checking in and security screening at the airport. Passengers are encouraged to follow these recommended tips for a more pleasurable travel experience:
Before leaving for the airport
-- Visit the carrier's Web site and print out boarding passes (if possible); check flight status and determine what type of meal service will be offered; be aware of carrier carry-on and checked-baggage policies, and plan accordingly
-- Have amenities readily accessible, including an extra supply of any necessary prescriptions or other medicines, snacks (and for those traveling with children, baby food/diapers), for use in the event of an extended delay
-- If carrying liquids or gels in a carry-on bag, pack them in a one-quart zip-top bag and place them in a readily accessible location
-- Remove extraneous metal objects (e.g., keys, coins) from pockets and place them in carry-on baggage
-- At the airport have your government-issued identification and boarding pass ready at the security screening checkpoint
-- Consider purchasing bottled water or other liquids after the security checkpoint
-- Have reading material or games readily accessible during the flight
-- On the airplane, utilize the space under the seat in front of you for smaller personal
items
Travelers can play a role in reducing their delays by telling Congress to transition to a next-generation air traffic control system. Visit http://www.smartskies.org.
FAA To Expand System Giving Carriers Flexibility To Avoid Summer Storms
The FAA says that this summer it will expand an air traffic control strategy aimed at minimizing delays caused by poor weather. The "airspace flow program" allows carriers to choose between accepting delays and flying longer routes to avoid stormy weather.

British Airways May Fly Only Business Class Flights Between US and Europe
British Airways is considering all business class flights on routes between the United States and continental Europe, its chief executive said on Monday, as the carrier looks to tap the lucrative end of the expanding transatlantic market. Europe’s second-biggest airline by traffic is considering such services as a way to take high-margin business from rivals Air France-KLM and Lufthansa, as the market for flights between the United States and European Union opens up next year.
BA, Britain's flag carrier, is mulling the upscale move after start-up airlines such as Eos pioneered business class only flights between London and New York in 2005.
The airline, which has been increasing the number of premium seats on long-haul flights, is focusing on rising demand in the business and first class sector, which is more profitable than economy.
Virgin Atlantic Airways is also considering a new all-business-class service between the US and London in 2008. Virgin says the new service would not compete directly with its existing premium-class service, Upper C lass, but would offer a better quality product than existing all-business-class airlines, such as Eos, MaxJet, Silverjet, at the same or lower prices. The service may eventually include flights to European cities from New York and other US gateway cities.
Air France to Begin Jumbo Jet Flights In Spring 2008
Air France announced it will start flying new A380 superjumbo jets next spring and has begun testing gates and other operations with an A380 at Charles De Gaulle International Airport outside Paris.
Be the Early Bird That Catches the Flight
If your holiday flight is delayed, you may have only yourself to blame. According to leading British charter airline Thomas Cook, at least 20 per cent of late take-offs are due to passengers boarding the aircraft late. Now, with a big new focus on punctuality, the airline is to close aircraft doors ten minutes before the scheduled departure time. And passengers are being urged to be the 'early bird that catches the flight'.
Big queues to go through security are taking their toll, especially at busy times. Just one passenger arriving at the departure gate a few minutes late can be enough for an aircraft to lose its departure slot and could result in a delay.
With punctuality consistently being top of the wish list in passenger research, Thomas Cook has launched a wide-ranging campaign to help on time take off. The entire airline's staff and its suppliers such as aircraft cleaners and ground handlers are involved in the big punctuality push.
The airline is also asking passengers to play their part. With new security measures at airports leading to much longer queues to go airside, Thomas Cook is urging people to help by following a simple Early Bird code:
DO allow plenty of time to arrive at the airport -and allow for traffic jams at busy periods
DO make sure you know exactly what you can take through airport security - especially what liquids and medicines you can take through and how they must be packed (see www.thomascookairlines.co.uk )
DO check in at least two hours before departure (three hours for long haul flights) and then go straight to security in case there are long queues
DO arrive at the departure gate at least 45 minutes before take off is due, allowing yourself plenty of time to find the right gate
DON'T get so involved with shopping you forget the time
DON'T get drunk and fall asleep in the departure lounge
DON'T wait at the wrong gate because you have misread the screens and not looked at your boarding card
Glen Chipp, Managing Director said: "With more complex security measures, passengers really do need to play their part in getting the aircraft away on time and should be aiming to be at their departure gate 45 minutes before their flight is due to leave. Our key message is aim to be early, not just on time. Get yourself to the right departure gate as soon as you can - you'll be helping yourself and fellow passengers to take off on schedule. If you're late, you risk not being able to fly."

U.S., China Agree to Double Flights
The United States and China announced a broad aviation agreement that will more than double the number of daily passenger flights between the two countries by 2012. As the U.S. and Chinese economies become more intertwined, passenger traffic between the countries has surged and flights are crammed with business travelers, tourists and students.
U.S. officials said the agreement would improve the nation's commercial and cultural ties with one of the world's economic powerhouses. The deal would allow U.S. carriers to operate 13 more daily flights to China over the next five years. In 2011, the Chinese would lift all limits on transpacific cargo flights, officials said.
Until the announcement, the Chinese government had moved slowly to lift limits on flights by US carriers to Beijing, Shanghai and the southern city of Guangzhou; ten daily flights are permitted now.
Under the agreement, the US Transportation Department plans to award routes to U.S. carriers in stages through 2012. The first could be granted this summer. The daily flights would exceed by 10 the number U.S. commercial carriers were going to be granted through 2010 under a previous deal, officials said.
New York/JFK Carriers To Enhance the Boarding Experience
More airlines are partnering with concessionaires to determine which brands 'wine and dine' airport passengers in an effort to enhance the consumer travel experience before boarding, according to HMSHost, the world's largest travel dining and shopping operator. The company announced that John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), the leading international air passenger gateway in the United States, is being transformed into a dining "destination" through the awarding of three food and beverage contracts to HMSHost. "Many airlines think that what we eat and drink near their gates -- or bring on board -- is an integral part of a traveler's overall experience," said Joe Waller, vice president of business development for HMSHost. "Carriers want the airport food and beverage offerings to reflect their brands and their passengers' tastes."
HMSHost was awarded a seven-year extension (through 2014) of its existing contract for construction of four new facilities. Working with Terminal One Group Association (TOGA), the company will introduce a Starbucks Coffee and the following new brands scheduled to open this spring:
In Terminal 1, new facilities include Idlewild Wine Bar; Medalist Sports Bar offering made to order grilled sandwiches, pizzas, salads and wraps; Sbarros/Greenwich Village Bistro offering a buffet of freshly prepared food with Italian flavors.
In Terminal 2, new outlets include Balducci's Food Lover's Market; Todd English's Bonfire Steakhouse and Todd English's Bonfire Bar; the French Meadow Bakery & Café; Legends Sports Bar; and Starbucks Coffee.
Terminal 7 will offer eight new food and beverage concepts including Bombay Sapphire Martini Bar; Wolfgang Puck Gourmet Express & Wolfgang Puck Grab & Go; Zoom Interactive Café and Zoom Gadget Zone.

Rail News & Offers
Thalys Trains To Get Faster In 2008
Thalys takes just 1 hour 25 minutes to go from downtown Paris to Brussels, most of the journey made at 186 mph. In 2008, all Thalys tracks will be high-speed and travel times Paris-Amsterdam (currently 4 hrs 11 min.) and Paris-Cologne (presently 3 hrs 50 min) will be cut to 3 hrs 9 min and 2 hrs 50 min, respectively. Up to 27 trains travel between Paris and Brussels in each direction daily, making the service convenient as well as fast.
Thalys has given the airlines so much competition since it began operation in 1996 that all flights between Paris and Brussels were discontinued, and the airlines instead book their passengers on the train.
The number of North Americans buying tickets on Thalys in 2006 increased 5 percent compared to 2005, reports Rail Europe, largest North American distributor of European rail products. Last year a total of 6.5 million passengers rode the sleek red train.
Rail Europe offers the widest range of routes and fares on trains throughout Europe and the U.K., as well as the broadest selection of rail passes.
For more information or to book, contact a travel agent or Rail Europe at 1-888-382-7245 in the U.S. or 1-800-361-7245 in Canada, or log onto www.raileurope.com or www.raileurope.ca (in Canada).
Detour of ‘California Zephyr’ to Track Historic Transcontinental Railroad Route
Scheduled track improvements on the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) in Colorado will require Amtrak to use an alternate route for the California Zephyr between Denver and Salt Lake City during five periods in July and August. The detour will follow the historic transcontinental railroad route through Wyoming and Utah.
On the following dates Amtrak will be unable to use the UP route between Granby and Glenwood Springs.
July 10 & 11
July 15-18
July 22-25
July 29-Aug. 1
July 5-8
On those days, the California Zephyr will detour between Denver and Salt Lake City via a northern route through Wyoming, making no intermediate station stops.
On the days the train detours, Amtrak will provide alternate motorcoach transportation at Denver for westbound passengers to Glenwood Springs or Grand Junction and for eastbound passengers from Grand Junction or Glenwood Springs. Service to and from Fraser-Winter Park and Granby, Colo.; Green River, Helper and Provo, Utah, will be suspended on the days the trains are detoured.
Passengers traveling between Chicago and Denver or between Salt Lake City and Emeryville in San Francisco Bay Area will be unaffected. Amtrak has informed passengers between Denver and Salt Lake City who were ticketed during the 18 days of the detour and is offering the alternate transportation (schedule attached). Passengers have also been offered travel on alternate days or refunds.
The detour route will follow a portion of the original transcontinental UP route that was completed in 1869. While the scenery is less mountainous than the California Zephyr's regular routing, it offers broad vistas of the high plains and an opportunity to see a route that passenger trains have not regularly traversed since 1997.

Tuscan Way Offers A Week Of Yoga And Opera At Its 18th-Century Villa
Tuscan Way, the nine-year-old company known for its Tuscan cooking vacations, is showcasing a seven-day yoga and wellness package, October 20-26, at Villa Poggiarello, an 18th-century villa surrounded by vineyards, rolling hills, medieval villages and natural parks, just outside Siena. As a wonderful addition to the program, Tuscan Way has arranged for acclaimed lyric soprano, Karine Eva Darrah, to perform and lecture throughout the week, sharing her magnificent voice and depth of knowledge of both established and new operas.
This extraordinary program, priced at the 2006 rate of $2,590 per person, double, provides a high level of personal attention to students along with a mixture of Eastern health principles (Ayurvedic & Chinese), delicious fresh Tuscan foods and the slower, arguably healthier lifestyle of Tuscan life. The classes, ranging from hour-long meditations to instruction in Vinyassa and Hatha yoga, are taught by the renowned husband-wife yoga teaching team of Michi Holley & Brandon Jones, who run an acupuncture and yoga center in Hawaii and travel the world teaching yoga at resorts and to celebrities like Sting and John McEnroe.
The all-inclusive trip includes accommodations in one of ten private apartments sleeping between two to six each; all meals (with vegetarian options); two hours per day of instructor-led Yoga in small groups; wine tasting at vineyards in Pienza, Montepulciano or Montalcino; daily guided excursions to Siena, Vetulonia, Montepescali, Roccatederughi, Porto Santo Stefano, Talmone, Porto Ercole and Castiglione; and transfers to/from Rome.
Tuscan Way participants are also introduced to La Cucina Povera Tuscana—the art of the traditional peasant’s style of using locally grown ingredients to prepare the freshest of dishes. Romeo Innocenti, known throughout the area for his culinary talents, especially with certain Maremma seafood dishes, teaches optional hands-on cooking classes in an informal style, glasses of Carmignano and Chianti wines always within arm’s reach.

Asia Transpacific Journeys Includes Calendar of Festivals
Asia Transpacific Journeys is at the forefront of what’s new and hot in Asia and the Pacific, yet also includes centuries-old rites and celebrations in its Small Group Trips and Custom Journeys programs.
Following are festivals coming up in Asia Transpacific Journeys 2007- 2008 calendar. For details on the trips surrounding these events, please see http://www.asiatranspacific.com .
-- July 2007 – Mongolia: the Naadam Festival was originally religious, but now celebrates Mongolian independence. It features "manly" activities including wrestling, archery and horse racing, although women now participate in the latter two. The Naadam in Ulaanbaatar is by far the most renowned in all of Mongolia: in a two-day stint you can witness the Flag Ceremony on the main square, the Opening Ceremony in the stadium, and the wrestling and archery competitions. Grab a seat for the famed horse racing in the surrounding countryside. In the evening witness a performance of Mongolian folk song and dance.
-- November 21-24, 2007—India: the Pushkar Camel Fair draws livestock traders from all over western India, but that isn't all. Like nearly every gathering, large and small across the country, the lunar calendar dictates the date of the festival, transforming a mere livestock show into an auspicious spiritual confluence of man and beast. There will be mystics and musicians, camel-wallahs and priests, and vendors plying their wares from the far corners of Rajasthan. It's a riot of color and activity, from sacred bathing rituals to camel races. Stay in a private tented camp, which provides a comfortable and secure haven for your two nights here.
-- November 23-24, 2007 – Thailand: Loy Krathong is known as the festival of lights. Thailand’s most colorful festival, falling on the first full moon each November, will take place Nov 23-24, 2007. At noon boat races are held along the Ping River. This special festival will allow visitors to see the graceful longboats gliding through the water, straining neck to neck for the finish line. In the evening, as the sun falls, pilgrims launch thousands of tiny banana-leaf boats, each carrying a single candle. This is a delicate and mystical scene, enhanced by the light of the full moon.
-- January 2008 –Myanmar (Burma): Ananda Temple Festival in Bagan is feted for one month, coinciding with the January full moon. The temple, already stunning in the daytime setting, takes on a spectacular radiance in the glow of carnival lights. Entire villages arrive in caravans of covered carts, bringing bedding, cooking pots and dry rations, while rafts bearing pottery and other household goods float downstream toward the fair. The approach to the Ananda Temple is then lined with stall after stall selling a variety of goods for sale, from household knickknacks to huge jars to delicious sweet and savory delights.
Trips range from 14-17 days for Small Group Trips (maximum 16 guests) and cost from $4,395 per person (depending on destination) for land costs that include highest end accommodations, nearly all meals, transfers, visa fees, tips, entrance fees, medical and emergency insurance and a comprehensive pre-departure packet. Asia Transpacific Journeys can also arrange international air through its in-house air department.
Asia Transpacific Journeys has been crafting private Custom Journeys and Small Group Trips to the Asia/Pacific region since 1987.

NOTE ON PASSPORTS
The U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security announced June 8, 2007 that U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda who have applied for but not yet received passports can nevertheless temporarily enter and depart from the United States by air with a government-issued photo identification and Department of State official proof of application for a passport through September 30, 2007. The federal government is making this accommodation for air travel due to longer than expected processing times for passport applications in the face of record-breaking demand.
The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) was mandated by Congress in the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 to strengthen border security and facilitate entry into the United States for citizens and legitimate international visitors. WHTI requirements for air travel took effect on January 23, 2007.
Adults who have applied for but not yet received a passport should present government-issued photo identification and an official proof of application from the U.S. Department of State. Children under the age of 16 traveling with their parents or legal guardian will be permitted to travel with the child’s proof of application. Travelers who have not applied for a passport should not expect to be accommodated. US citizens with pending passport applications can obtain proof of application at: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/status/status_2567.html .
This accommodation does not affect entry requirements to other countries. Americans traveling to a country that requires passports must still present those documents.
Since implementation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has and will continue to exercise its current authorities in unique circumstances to allow individuals subject to the WHTI requirements into the United States based on other evidence of identity and citizenship.
As early as January 2008, the departments will begin to implement WHTI at land and sea ports of entry. A Notice of Proposed Rulemaking outlining a phased implementation is expected to be published in the Federal Register within the next two weeks.
Travel document security remains a top priority for the U.S. Government. Both the 9/11 Commission and the U.S. Congress urged strengthening of travel documents to prevent entry of terrorists across our borders, reduce use of fraudulent documents, and speed up entry procedures.
If you would like to request the status of your application by email, please go to the National Passport Information Center - Passport Status Inquiry.
A new website, www.GetAPassportNow.com was established by the travel industry to inform travelers about new passport requirements and to help them get passports.
