Keukenhof Flower Exhibition Opens in Lisse March 21

The 58th edition of the international Keukenhof flower exhibition in Lisse will be opened by Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. The presence of the princess will lend extra distinction to the Keukenhof theme for 2007: Linnaeus: King of Flowers Turns 300. The official opening of Keukenhof will take place on the first day of spring, Wednesday March 21. The park will be open to the public from  March 22 till May 20.

This year marks the third centenary of the birth of the Swedish physician and botanist Carolus Linnaeus. Keukenhof chose this theme to accentuate the vital role that Linnaeus played in the world of bulb cultivation. To this very day, tulips are named according to a classification system developed by Linnaeus in the eighteenth century. The theme will be repeated in many different shapes and forms throughout the park, with the Herbarium Amoris photographic exhibition in the Juliana Pavilion as the centerpiece.

Blue and yellow will be the predominant tones in many of the plant arrangements. An inspirational garden based on Sweden's national colors and exhibitions of Swedish art will also be on display. The theme was launched a few months ago when a group of children planted the bulbs for the mosaic of Pippi Longstocking, the heroine from the children's books by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. The huge portrait of Pippi (16 x 11 meters) will blossom in the spring of 2007. More information at www.keukenhof.nl.

Valencia Spain To Host The America’s Cup In June

Your browser may not support display of this image.

To welcome the competitors for the America’s Cup next year, Spain’s medieval city of Valencia is opening itself to the sea. For the first time in more than 150 years–from June 23 to July 7, 2007—Europe will host sailing’s most prestigious event.  Some 6 million visitors are expected to watch the world’s best yachtsmen from ten countries battle it out as the Swiss Alinghi team defends its title against 11 other teams.

In 1851 Queen Victoria watched the last competition in Europe as the yacht America representing the New York Yacht Club beat 15 British vessels racing around the Isle of Wight. Since then, America’s Cup races have only been held in Britain, the US, Australia and New Zealand. Reliable wind conditions, year-round temperate weather and the promise of a race that will bring spectators closer to the sailing action were key factors in convincing officials that Valencia would be the best venue.

Preceding the America’s Cup April 3 to 7 is the Louis Vuitton Act 13 Fleet Race and the Louis Vuitton Cup, April 16 to June 12. One winning team emerges from the races of the Louis Vuitton Cup, with the honor of competing in the America’s CupMatch final against the defending champion. Swim with the World's Largest Fish - Whale Sharks In Belize

Each spring, in the Central American country of Belize, whale sharks – weighing in as much as 20 tons and measuring up to 65 feet in length – emerge from the depths of the Caribbean Sea off the southern coast of Belize where Scuba divers and snorkelers relish in the rare opportunity to swim alongside these gentle giants. “We are fortunate that these magnificent creatures seasonally return to Belize’s warm waters,” said Director of Tourism Tracy Panton. “Visitors to the beautiful country of Belize have the unique opportunity to get up close to the curious whale sharks and experience this incredible natural phenomenon.”

Whale sharks are characterized by their white, spotted back, two dorsal fins and of course, gigantic size. Although their enormity may be daunting, these docile fish are docile and feed on plankton. In fact, it is the annual spawning of the cubera snapper during the months of March, April, May and June that brings the whale sharks to the Gladden Spit Marine Reserve just beyond Belize’s barrier reef.

Wildflowers Bring Springtime Drama To Desert Valley National Park

Early in March, when much of the country is still under a blanket of snow, Death Valley National Park often shows off a different kind of blanket when colorful wildflowers

bloom throughout the lower elevations of the 3.3 million-acre park. Most years, the park's breathtaking show continues through the middle of April, and elevations of 5,000 feet bloom as late as June. The annual wildflower bloom draws visitors from around the world who stop at Zabriskie Point and other popular park viewpoints to take in the

breathtaking beauty of hills and valleys dotted with bold yellows, purples, whites and pinks.

According to the National Park Service, one of the best areas in the park for viewing early spring wildflowers is off Highway 190 near the Furnace Creek Inn. In that area, the dominant flowers include Desert Star, Desert Gold, Blazing Star, Poppies, Verbena, Evening Primrose and various species of cacti. From early April through May, the best area for viewing flowers is the Panamint Mountains where visitors will see Paintbrush, Mojave Desert Rue, Lupine, Bear Poppy, Joshua Tree and Panamint Daisies. The final burst of color for the year—viewable from late April through early June in the High Panamint Mountains above 4,000 feet—results from Mojave Wildrose, Rabbitbrush, Panamint Daisies, Mariposa Lilies and Lupine.

Death Valley National Park is within driving distance of Las Vegas and Southern California. The park is known as a land of extremes. It is one of the hottest, driest and lowest places in North America. Death Valley is the largest park in the lower 48 states, yet it draws fewer than 830,000 visitors a year. By comparison, the nation's second-largest park in the lower 48 states—Yellowstone National Park—hosts some 2.8

million visitors annually. More information about Death Valley National Park and updated information about the 2007 wildflower bloom can be found at http://www.nps.gov/deva/index.htm.

The Clear program has been operational at Orlando Airport since July 19, 2005, and it expects to launch at Indianapolis, San Jose and Cincinnati airports this month. Verified Identity Pass says it will launch at JFK Terminal 1 in March, and it has an agreement to set up a program in Canada at Toronto Pearson Airport.

American Airlines Moves to Terminal 2 at Tokyo's Narita Airport

American Airlines, the world's largest airline and the only U.S. airline to serve Tokyo out of the four major U.S. cities of Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, New York and Los Angeles combined, has relocated to Narita International Airport's Terminal 2 and began operations January 17.

Now, customers connecting between American and fellow oneworld airlines will have minimum connection times of approximately 70 minutes, a substantial improvement over the current 110 minutes. In addition, compared to its U.S. competitors, American's passenger check-in location provides greater convenience for customers originating in Tokyo, with closer proximity for them to check in, go through immigration, and enter the new Admirals Club(R) lounge or access American's gates.

A new 13,300-square-foot Admirals Club lounge with seating for 265 will also open in Terminal 2. The new club is almost twice as large as the current Admirals Club lounge and is about two-and-a-half times closer to American's ticket counters and gates than the distance between the ticket counters and clubs of some of its U.S. competitors at Narita. The club is also located near oneworld airline member gates, adding convenience for customers traveling between the United States and Japan or other destinations in Asia. The new location means customers will now have more time to use the Admirals Club lounge before and between flights.

For travelers to the Asia-Pacific region, American operates five roundtrip flights a day between Tokyo and Dallas/Fort Worth (two daily flights), Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City's JFK International Airport. Notably, American is the only U.S. airline to offer direct service between Tokyo and Dallas/Fort Worth and Tokyo and JFK. The new terminal will house and conveniently connect passengers to oneworld alliance airlines

Caribbean Sun passengers with confirmed tickets for travel between San Juan and Santo Domingo after Jan. 16 or tickets for travel between other Caribbean Sun gateways after Jan. 31 will be reaccommodated on Cape Air, Caribbean Airlines (formerly BWIA) or LIAT. Refunds will be arranged if alternate services cannot be arranged. For details, call (800) 723-1111.

                        Rail Travel News & Offers

Record Year For Eurostar As More Travelers Switch From Airlines To Rail

Eurostar, the high-speed passenger train service linking the UK with France and Belgium, saw record sales and traveler numbers in 2006, as it attracted thousands of passengers from the airlines. Sales topped half a billion pound sterling ($9.5 million) for the first time, rising 11.7 percent. £518.3 million (just under $1 billion).  North American sales of Eurostar tickets by Rail Europe, Eurostar’s official North American representative, increased 6 percent for the year, with exceptionally strong sales August-December, with an average monthly increase of 30 percent.

A total of 7.86 million travelers chose Eurostar in 2006, up 5.4 percent over 2005.  Of those, more than 200,000 bought tickets in North America from Rail Europe.  Globally, the largest increase (17 percent) was in the number of passengers buying fully flexible Business Premier tickets.  Rail Europe reports similarly a growth in the number of higher-priced flexible tickets sold in North America.  More than 43 percent of Rail Europe’s Eurostar tickets were sold in 2006 via the company’s recently revamped Web sites.

Punctuality in 2006 was a record 91.5 percent, far outstripping airline competitors on the London-Paris and London-Brussels routes.  Latest figures from the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority show that punctuality at London’s airports remains around 70 percent, as in previous years. Increased security at airports since the summer and foggy weather in the UK before Christmas meant thousands of passengers switched from airlines to Eurostar.  Many of these travelers were using Eurostar for the first time, and it is estimated that 1,000 business travelers per week have now permanently transferred from flying to taking the high-speed train.

Another contributing factor to ticket sales growth was the introduction in August 2006 of a new fare range for Eurostar tickets in North America.  The new range offers more options for low fares and fewer restrictions on lower-priced fares. “We believe that the combination of the new fare range, fast travel times, excellent punctuality, frequent service between city-centers and the lower hassle factor compared to air travel explains the very strong North American sales we saw in the last part of 2006,” said Fabrice Morel, President and CEO of Rail Europe.

Traveling at speeds up to 186 mph, Eurostar currently makes the London-Paris journey in 2 hrs 35 min, London-Brussels in 2 hrs 15 minutes on the fastest schedules.  Fares start at just $94 US/$110 CAD one-way between London-Paris (or London-Brussels).  Travel times will shrink even more this November 14 when the last segment of UK high-speed track is completed.

On November 14, 2007 Eurostar’s London terminal moves overnight from Waterloo International and services will launch from the new central London station, St. Pancras International.  More than 70 million travelers have ridden Eurostar since the launch of service in 1994.

For more information visit www.eurostar.com or contact Rail Europe, Eurostar’s official North American representative at www.raileurope.com (U.S.) or www.raileurope.ca (Canada) or call 1-800-EUROSTAR (1-800-387-6782) in the U.S. or Canada.

Hilton San Francisco Financial District to Offer Free High-speed Internet Access

Chalk one up for hotel guests who have become increasingly impatient with extra charges assessed by hotels for a growing number of services, from billing for toll-free telephone calls to tacking on early departure fees. Today, the Hilton San Francisco Financial District announced that effective immediately, the hotel will offer free high-speed wired and wireless Internet access to its guests in what is believed to be the first such gesture by an upper upscale, full-service branded hotel in the city by the bay.

The free high-speed Internet access is available in all guest rooms and the hotel lobby, while the top five floors of the hotel offer a hard wired option, as well. "Globally, we are becoming increasingly connected to the Internet," Everton said. "We know our guests would much rather connect to the outside world from the comfort and convenience of their guest room rather than having to search the city for a free hot spot. We're confident that our short-term loss of revenue will be more than offset by higher guest satisfaction, which in turn leads to higher occupancy. We see this as a win- win move for everyone."

Adjacent to the Transamerica building, the 27-story Hilton San Francisco Financial District offers breathtaking views of the city and bay. Located at 750 Kearny Street at the crossroads of the Financial District, Chinatown and North Beach, the hotel recently completed a $45 million complete transformation.
