Beginning with the 2006 launch of the MS Amadagio, the line has steadily expanded its  fleet to include the MS Amalegro (2007), MS Amacello (2008) and MS Amadante (2008). The MS Amalyra and MS Amadolce will join the fleet in 2009, while another two vessels are scheduled to debut in 2010.
The state-of-the-art fleet in Europe carries 148 passengers in unequaled luxury, comfort and style. Tauck Reveals Name Of New Riverboat And Announces 2009 Dates
Tauck World Discovery has revealed that its newest riverboat, currently under construction and set to debut next April, will be called the MS Swiss Jewel.  The ship will be Tauck’s third all-new riverboat in a three-year span when it’s launched, joining its sister-ships the MS Swiss Sapphire (launched April, 2008) and the MS Swiss Emerald (launched April, 2006). “We’re very excited to be boosting our European river cruising capacity once again,” said Tauck CEO Dan Mahar.  “Our existing fleet is widely considered to represent the finest riverboats afloat, and the Swiss Jewel will reflect the same very high Tauck standards that have helped the Swiss Emerald and Swiss Sapphire become so highly regarded.”
River cruising has been the fastest-growing segment of Tauck’s business for the past several years, and its 2008 departures were over 70 percent sold-out by late last fall The company’s line-up of seven river cruise itineraries, departure dates, vessels, pricing and more are all highlighted in its new full-color, 52-page, 2009 river cruising brochure that is currently mailing to travel agents and Tauck customers.

Aussie Godmother Launches Avalon’s New European Vessel

The new Avalon Scenery
With the smash of a champagne bottle this month, West Australian traveler Kerry Clements has joined the likes of royals and celebrities after being chosen as “Godmother” to a new Avalon Waterways ship on the rivers of France—Avalon Scenery. Having deemed the Scenery a ship for the passengers, Avalon decided against a royal or celebrity to launch the ship and instead chose a Godmother from among the first women to board for its inaugural 11-day cruise.
Avalon Waterways is among the world’s leading operators of luxury river cruises, offering journeys through some of the most spectacular regions of Europe as well as in Egypt, China and the Galapagos Islands.
Designed as the smallest and most luxurious ship in the fleet, Avalon Scenery carries just 138 passengers in 67 spacious staterooms and suites. It operates the Avalon Waterways Flavors of Burgundy and Provence cruise, an 11-day holiday between Paris and Nice passing through the spectacular scenery, historic villages and acclaimed vineyards of south-eastern France.  See www.avalonwaterways.com for more details.

Viking River Cruises Releases 2009 River Cruise Atlas(TM)
Viking River Cruises has released its 2009 River Cruise Atlas, featuring one new vessel, several ship renovations, a new itinerary and a number of exciting new programs.
"We have called our brochure 'The River Cruise Atlas' to reflect the many rivers of the world on which we travel," explained Torstein Hagen, founding chairman of Viking River Cruises. The Atlas announces Viking Legend, a new ship launching in Europe for the 2009 season, and several extensive ship renovations, as well as a 22-day Ultimate European Journey itinerary and some fascinating new land extensions and enrichment programs.
The company has also announced its best-ever Early Booking Incentive; those who book and pay in full for any 2009 Viking voyage by May 30, 2008 save $1,200 per stateroom ($600 per guest), and those who book and pay in full for a 2009 Viking voyage by July 31, 2008 save $1,000 per stateroom ($500 per guest). "During times when the dollar is weak against the euro, river cruising is an excellent value," Hagen continued. "American and Canadian guests pay for their vacations in dollars, and once they have paid in full their price is locked in with no worries about currency fluctuations, fuel costs or tax increases. Everything is included-daily shore excursions, workshops and other activities, all onboard meals, beautiful river-view staterooms with windows that open-and in Europe we will be providing free shipwide wireless access in 2009."
Viking River Cruises offers 19 itineraries in Europe, Russia, Ukraine and China, ranging from 8 to 22 days in length. While the majority of its river cruises are in Europe, the company is also a Russia specialist with two comprehensive journeys along the Volga, Neva and Svir between Moscow and St. Petersburg and one trip through Ukraine between Kiev and Odessa. In China, Viking has the very best ships, featuring all balcony staterooms and fully equipped Western-style kitchens. The company's three China cruisetours take visitors to China's highlights, including Beijing, Shanghai and the Terra Cotta Army in Xian, plus a Yangtze River cruise.
The new Viking Legend will launch in 2009 on the very popular Grand European Tour itinerary, and on select sailings of Tulips & Windmills, the company's springtime tour of the Netherlands and Belgium; Viking Legend will bring the total number of vessels in Viking's fleet to 22. Viking Legend will feature two decks of French balconies and hybrid engines that are 20% more efficient than the typical river cruising vessel. Two other Europe ships, Viking Schumann and Viking Fontane, will be upgraded, and in Russia Viking Kirov will receive a full renovation for 2009 similar to that of Viking Surkov for 2008. "Viking had the first Western-owned and operated ships in Russia, and now with the renovations of Viking Surkov and Viking Kirov they are the two most outstanding vessels in Russia," stated Hagen.
Viking has one comprehensive new itinerary for 2009, Ultimate European Journey. This 22-day river cruise sails along the Rhine, Main and Danube Rivers through eight European countries: the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria. "Such a journey has been dreamt of for centuries," said Hagen. "Now, the opportunity exists to travel all the way from the North Sea to the Black Sea. What a great way to experience Central and Eastern Europe!"
In addition to the new itinerary, Viking has renewed its commitment to offer exciting pre- and post-cruise packages. These add-ons provide opportunity to begin or end journeys with a few days in an interesting new place. Depending on itinerary, guests may spend a week exploring four Baltic capitals, exotic Istanbul, the Alpine vistas of Switzerland, Nice and the French Riviera, Munich's fairy-tale castles or the lovely, unspoiled beauty of France's Channel Islands. Viking continues to offer its most popular land extensions in Amsterdam, Prague, Paris, Hong Kong & Guilin, Helsinki, Bucharest/Transylvania and more. On select extensions-London, Paris, Amsterdam, Prague, Budapest and Helsinki-participants are provided prepaid city passes which give them full access to public transportation and most of the city's museums and other attractions. The rest of the extensions include guided tours and free time with the services of a Viking concierge to help with activity planning.
Several new programs and amenities include free shipwide wireless Internet access will be enabled due to satellite downlinks installed on all ships in Europe. (In Russia and China, where satellite connectivity is not yet available, Internet access is still available for a nominal fee.) And Viking has established the Viking Explorer Society, where past guests receive a number of benefits including travel credits on upcoming journeys. Jewel River Cruises Launch Delayed
Jewel River Cruises has announced that the launch of the all-suite Jewel Imperial Blue has been delayed at least until August, due to extensive alterations in the original design.
The former ms Hispania, which carried mostly British passengers on river journeys in Europe, is being completely renovated to enlarge cabins and upgrade facilities. Additional architectural changes are said to be responsible for the delay.
Jewel River Cruises is one of three sub-brands of Jewel River Cruise Line (the others' ships are already chartered to European tour operators), and is being marketed to U.S. cruisers. JRCL is the brainchild of Albert Peter, who held the title of CEO at luxury line Silversea Cruises from 2001 until 2007.

Motion To Save ‘Delta Queen’ Defeated In US House Of Representatives
An attempt to save the historic steamboat Delta Queen, was narrowly defeated this month in the US House Of Representatives. Representative Steve Chabot, R-Ohio, had attached an amendment to the Coast Guard Authorization Act which would have granted a ten-year exemption from the Safety Of Life At Sea Act, which bans overnight passenger cruises on vessels with wooden superstructures. The legislation was defeated 208-195. Without the exemption, it is expected that the river boat will be forced to retire this fall. Delta Queen entered service in 1927 and is considered an authentic relic of the American overnight steamboat era.

Tauck Launches New ‘MS Swiss Sapphire’ Riverboat
Tauck World Discovery gathered at the Antwerp Cruise Terminal in Antwerp, Belgium earlier this month for the official christening of Tauck’s new MS Swiss Sapphire luxury riverboat.  The launch of the Swiss Sapphire comes just two years after the launch of its sister-ship, Tauck’s MS Swiss Emerald.
The Swiss Sapphire was constructed in Hardinxveld Giessendam in the Netherlands, and it will alternate with the Swiss Emerald on six different itineraries.  The launch of the Swiss Sapphire highlights Tauck’s sixth year offering European river cruises, and it marks the company’s continued expansion in the category.  Besides the launch of the Sapphire, the company is also adding two new European river cruise itineraries this spring.
Despite the expansion of its fleet and its cruise offerings, Tauck is intentionally managing its growth, says CEO Dan Mahar.  “We’re taking a very deliberate and measured approach as we grow our river cruising business, to make sure that the quality of the experience continues to live up to Tauck’s standards, and to exceed the expectations of our guests,” said Mahar.  “Our goal is not to be the largest river cruise company in the world, it’s to be the best.”

The 361-foot Swiss Sapphire accommodates a maximum of just 118 guests, compared to 150 or more on other similarly sized vessels.  Guests aboard the Sapphire can choose among 59 outside-facing staterooms, including 14 luxury suites.  Each suite boasts 300 square-feet of living space highlighted by floor-to-ceiling windows, walk-in closets and marble baths with full size tubs.  An additional 45 junior suites and cabins range from 150 to 183 square-feet.  All suites and cabins are well appointed with plasma TVs, mini-bars, terry cloth robes, radios, safes, individual air conditioning and L’Occitane toiletries.  The ship also features a 24-hour Jacuzzi, steam room, Lido bar, lounge, restaurant and wellness center.  Along with a ship’s crew of 29, the Sapphire also has an onboard staff of three Tauck Directors and one Tauck Cruise Director to ensure superior service and attention to guests’ needs. Victoria Cruises Refurbishing Six Ships In Fleet For 2008 Sailing China Season Victoria Cruises ( www.victoriacruises.com), a pre-eminent cruise company sailing China’s Yangtze River, is in the midst of refurbishing the majority of its fleet for the 2008 season. The multi-million-dollar refurbishment includes new carpets in all cabins and public areas; new paneled ceilings in most public areas; redesigned lobbies with a front desk concierge and foreign-exchange services; and the addition of à la carte dining services in a separate private room on an upper deck of each vessel (except the Victoria Prince and Victoria Rose)
The refurbishment project encompasses six of Victoria Cruises’ seven vessels: the Victoria Anna, Victoria Katarina, Victoria Star, Victoria Queen, Victoria Empress and Victoria Rose. Since it was used for the cruise line’s winter program, the Victoria Prince was not a part of this upgrade, but its most recent refurbishment (when it was rebuilt) was in 2004. “Continually upgrading our vessels is essential to maintaining our strong position in the marketplace, and since Victoria Cruises owns its ships, we have more flexibility in what we need to do and when, plus we can expedite the entire process,” said Larry Greenman, manager of public relations and customer service for Victoria Cruises. “We will also be the only Yangtze cruise line offering such an impressive, upgraded fleet during the Summer Olympics in Beijing,” Greenman noted.
All tastefully-decorated cabins fleet-wide have televisions with HBO and CNN broadcasts, private marble bathroom with a shower and bathtub, and a private balcony (except the Victoria Rose) so guests can appreciate the magnificent views of the Yangtze River. In addition to the Dynasty Dining Hall and new a la carte restaurant, each ship features a fitness room, lecture room (for talks about the river’s history and lessons in Tai Chi, Mandarin language and mah jong), library/reading room, the Yangtze Club (theatre-style night club), cocktail lounge, beauty salon, gift shop, spacious observation deck, business center, Internet access, health clinic, and an atrium lobby.
In April 2009, Victoria Cruises will grow its fleet to eight vessels with the introduction of the new Victoria Jenna. When the Victoria Jenna edges out of port on April 26, 2009, it will be the largest and most luxurious vessel plying the Yangtze River with the highest passenger capacity and most suites of all ships sailing these mighty waters.
Victoria Cruises offers a variety of itineraries varying from four to nine days including the Grand Yangtze Discovery, Three Gorges Highlights, and Three Gorges Explorer.

Jewel River Cruises Debuts As First Boutique-Luxury River Cruise Line
Established cruise executive and highly-regarded international financier Albert Peter has launched Jewel River Cruises, a new company that aims to revolutionize the world of river cruising. The ms Jewel Imperial Blue debuts on May 15, 2008 as the first all-suite, boutique-luxury river cruise ship designed exclusively for today’s most discerning travelers. The line will grow with the addition of two brand new all-suite luxury ships in 2009 and 2010.
Jewel River Cruises is the boutique-luxury brand of parent company Jewel River Cruise Line, an innovative new river cruise venture comprised of independent brands – each aiming to provide the highest quality river cruise experience within their respective markets. For 2008, the five ships within the premium and contemporary brands will be based in central Europe and are already chartered to European tour operators.
Chairman and CEO Peter appointed luxury cruise veteran Jacques Wulffaert as President, COO and Member of the Board. Drawing upon their extensive experience in both luxury travel and small ship cruising – Peter is former CEO of Silversea Cruises; Wulffaert held senior executive positions with Celebrity Cruises and ResidenSea – the two have assembled a team of industry professionals to create a distinctive new boutique-luxury hotel style of river cruising. “The river cruise market is experiencing a tremendous boom and our goal is to be the dominant player in the industry,” says Peter.  “We see the potential of river cruising as so much more than a means of transportation from one beautiful port to another, but rather, a truly experiential way to explore some of the world’s most fascinating destinations,” Peter explains.
In May the ms Jewel Imperial Blue will debut with a ten-day maiden voyage along the River Seine to Rouen.  Cruising between Paris and Rouen, the ship will offer 22 voyages of seven and ten-days with the last sailing November 20.  Seven-day cruises start at $5,129 per person.
As the world’s first all-suite river cruise ship, the Jewel Imperial Blue will accommodate 80 guests in 40 suites with an impressive 2:1 guest-to-crew ratio. The three categories of suites – ranging from 215 square feet to 473 square feet – are among the largest of any river cruise ship and rival those found on luxury ocean liners.
Distinguishing characteristics will include multiple dining venues, intriguing shore experiences providing an exceptional level of exclusivity and access, a dedicated wellness spa, unrivaled service, and co-branding with internationally-renowned luxury partners.
Currently the ship is at the Hoogedoorn Shipyard near Rotterdam undergoing a complete refit, transforming its existing hull into a luxurious floating hotel at a cost of $3.5 million.  Designed by noted maritime architect Mertens of Munich, the yacht-like vessel will emerge from the conversion with a style that marries its classic lines and design heritage with all the flourishes of boutique luxury.
The world’s only all-suite boutique luxury river cruise will offer travelers a sophisticated onboard ambience combined with authentic discovery ashore reflecting its guests’ own lifestyle – privileged access, exclusive events and customized service. Amenities not found on other river cruise ships include: a specialty restaurant, cigar lounge and wine bar. Two Owners Suites will each be an expansive 473 square feet. The 14 Marquise Suites will measure a spacious 322 square feet and the 24 Jewel Suites will be 215 square feet. Private behind-the-scenes tours of the Louvre and Opera Bastille, a personal culinary class with a Michelin-3-star chef, private vintage wine tastings with master winemakers, a day at the wheel of a vintage Cabriolet or a helicopter ride over the Champagne countryside – these are only a few of the “Lifestyle Experiences” Jewel River Cruises has designed for its guests.  “Today’s seasoned traveler is seeking more in-depth, authentic exploration,” says Peter. “After all, true luxury is exclusivity and access to unique things,” he concludes.

Victoria Cruises To Refurbish ‘Victoria Empress’
Victoria Cruises will refurbish the Victoria Empress this winter. The ship is expected to resume sailing in March 2008. “We’re putting a lot of work into the restyling of the Victoria Empress because we recognize the importance of constantly upgrading our vessels in order to remain competitive in the growing Yangtze River marketplace,” said Larry Greenman, manager of public relations and customer service for Victoria Cruises.
The multi-million-dollar refurbishment includes the following:
-- 99 refurbished cabins and updated architectural interiors including new décor, carpeting, wood panels and bedding
-- Renovation of the Grand Lobby located on the first floor of the ship, which will now contain the front desk concierge, foreign exchange services, and the shopping gallery
-- Newly constructed Dynasty Dining Room with seating capacity for 198 passengers
-- A la carte dining services located in the multifunction room on the fourth deck
A five-star rated vessel by the China National Tourism Administration, the Victoria Empress will feature (post-refurbishment) 99 cabins (91 standard accommodations, 2 junior suites, 4 deluxe suites and 2 Shangri-la suites) for a total passenger capacity of 198 (and a crew of 117). At a gross tonnage of approximately 4,000, the four-passenger-deck vessel is 280.5 feet long and 47 feet wide with a draft of 8.5 – 8.8 feet. The ship was originally constructed in 1996 and rebuilt in 2002.
All tastefully-decorated cabins have televisions with HBO and CNN broadcasts, private marble bathroom with a shower and bathtub, and a private balcony so guests can appreciate the magnificent views of the Yangtze River. In addition to the two dining rooms, the Victoria Empress features a fitness room, lecture room (for talks about the river’s history and lessons in Tai Chi, Mandarin language and mah jong), library/reading room, the Yangtze Club (theatre-style night club), cocktail lounge, beauty salon, gift shop, spacious observation deck, business center, Internet access, health clinic, four elevators and an atrium lobby.
Victoria Cruises’ portfolio of seven ships comes in two categories – premier and classic. Premier ships (the Victoria Anna, Victoria Katarina, Victoria Empress, Victoria Prince, Victoria Queen and Victoria Star) are new or newly-rebuilt ships featuring enhanced facilities such as private balconies in every cabin, more spacious public areas, and a higher level of comfort, sophistication and décor throughout the ships. In the Classic ship category is the Victoria Rose (rebuilt in 2001). Although smaller than the other ships in the fleet, the Victoria Rose maintains the same high quality standards of the company’s other vessels. All ships maintain the highest international safety standards.
In April 2009, Victoria Cruises will grow its fleet to eight vessels with the introduction of the new Victoria Jenna. When the Victoria Jenna edges out of port on April 26, 2009, it will be the largest and most luxurious vessel plying Yangtze waters.

New Upscale River Cruise Line To Debut In 2008
In 2008 a new river cruise line offering cruises on European waterways will make its debut. Founded by Albert Peter, the former CEO of Silversea Cruises, Jewel River Cruise Line will be a company composed of three separate brands that Peter hopes will revolutionize the river cruise business. T
The line plans to operate a fleet of six, including one all-suite luxury ship with the possibility of adding two more luxury ships in 2009 and 2010. "The river cruise market is experiencing a tremendous boom, and we are creating a new collection of river cruise brands with the goal of being the dominant player in the industry," said Peter, the line's chairman and CEO at the time of the announcement.
Similar to ocean cruising, which has ships in price categories from "contemporary" to luxury, Jewel will have three distinct river cruising brands. Jewel River Cruises will operate at a boutique-luxury level; Emerald River Journeys will be the premium brand; and Princess River Journeys will serve the contemporary market. Peter assembled a veteran cast to launch the new venture, including President and COO Jacques Wulffaert, formerly a senior executive at Celebrity Cruises and ResidenSea.
For 2008 the five ships within the premium and contemporary brands will be based in Central Europe and are already fully chartered to European tour operators.
The boutique luxury brand, to be marketed in the US, debuts April 5 with the maiden voyage of Jewel Imperial Blue along the River Seine in France. The ship will first undergo a $3.5m refit at Hoogedoorn Shipyard near Rotterdam, emerging with 45 suites for 90 passengers. The suites measure an ample 237 square feet, with two owner’s suites at 473 square feet each. "Jewel River Cruises will offer a sophisticated onboard ambiance combined with authentic discovery ashore that reflects our guests' lifestyle," said Peter. Reservations will be accepted starting in January 2008, with detailed itinerary and fare information announced next month.

Majestic America Announces Farewell Cruises In 2008 For ‘Delta Queen’

Majestic America Line, one of the world’s premier river cruise lines and the largest river and coastal cruising company in America, announced that despite tremendous efforts by the company, many esteemed partners and thousands of previous guests, the US Congress has decided that the Delta Queen should not continue operating on America’s rivers beyond 2008. Without the extension from Congress, the Delta Queen will not be able to continue cruise voyages on the river.
Built in 1926, the Delta Queen, the last of the over-night steam-powered sternwheelers,  features a steel hull and a superstructure constructed of wood – a direct reflection of the designs of her time. Subsequent Coast Guard regulations prohibited wooden superstructures, but Congress decided more than 40 years ago to provide a special exemption from these rules for the historic Delta Queen. This exemption, which Congress had extended no fewer than six occasions, was set to expire in November 2008.
Majestic America Line is committed to providing this American treasure with a proper and well-deserved send off, and will spend the Delta Queen’s 2008 farewell season celebrating this historic landmark with the communities and people who hold her storied tradition of sailing the waterways of the United States so dear.
For years, the Delta Queen has been a beloved fixture on the heartland rivers of the United States and provided guests with a view of America from the waters that shaped the country’s expansion. The Delta Queen provides a wholly unique way to experience the great American communities, cultures and experiences along the Upper and Lower Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Arkansas, Black Warrior and Cumberland rivers, as well as the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.
In 1970, recognized as the last operational steam paddlewheeler with overnight accommodations plying the rivers, the Delta Queen was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 1989, she was designated as a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of Interior. She was inducted into the National Maritime Hall of Fame in 2004.
A veteran of World War II and the only steamboat to transit the Panama Canal, the 80 year-old Delta Queen was host to three U.S. presidents and a princess. Stars of stage, screen and the entertainment world have also graced her decks, as well as some of the most prominent business leaders and statesmen of our time.
The ship itself is rich with art and antiquities such as original Tiffany-style stained glass windows, rich hardwood paneling, gleaming brass fittings, the only Siamese ironwood floor aboard a steamboat, the dramatic and often-photographed Grand Staircase, an 1897 steam calliope, and the very same ship’s bell that sounded out landings for the steamboat that Mark Twain rode downriver in 1883.
Majestic America Line will dedicate the 2008 season to celebrating the Delta Queen’s 80 years of service and her fabled time on the river. “A journey on board the Delta Queen is a true American experience, providing guests with an authentic glimpse of our country’s culture and a time in our history when steamboats ruled the rivers,” said David A. Giersdorf, President, Majestic America Line. “We will make every sailing in 2008 a special event, allowing every guest, like so many before, the opportunity to share in the Delta Queen’s legacy and honor the last chapter in her service on the river.”
With just 24 departures on the Delta Queen during 2008, guests are encouraged to reserve their place in history soon. To find out more about traveling on the Delta Queen, please contact your Travel Professional, call a reservation specialist at (800) 434-1232 or visit www.MajesticAmericaLine.com
Majestic America’s Contessa Sidelined In 2008
After the announcement that the Delta Queen would retire from service in 2008, Majestic America also revealed the line's 422-passenger paddlewheeler Mississippi Queen, which has missed cruising in 2007 due to a planned major refurbishment that has not yet taken place, may not sail next year either. In addition, the company’s 48-passenger catamaran Contessa, may also not operate cruises next year.
Majestic America, founded in 2006, is owned by Ambassadors Cruise Group, a subsidiary of the Los Angeles-based Ambassadors International. The cruise arm was formed through the combination of American West Steamboat Company and the vessels of Delta Queen Steamboat Company, two cruise lines that specialized in small ship cruises on American Rivers. It operates seven ships, including Columbia Queen and Queen of the West, which focus on Columbia River, Mississippi River and Alaska journeys. Contessa, purchased in 2007, was the company's latest acquisition.

CroisiEurope Markets New Brand And Launches New Vessel
CroisiEurope is marketing a new brand, CROISIMER, and launching a new boat in Croatia, the MS Belle de l’Adriatique.

Having spent 30 successful years on the greatest rivers in Europe, CroisiEurope is diversifying its tourist business. It will now market its coastal cruises under the new Croisimer brand name. The first ship to sail for Croisimer is the MS Belle de l’Adriatique which will  be cruising from Dubrovnik to explore the Dalmatian archipelago. Currently under construction at a shipyard near Namur in Belgium, this new vessel represents an investment of 30 million euros. In addition, Croisimer is planning another two boats for this region by 2009.
This new generation of craft, designed to the standard of the CroisiEurope fleet offers the same levels of comfort and service for which the company is known, with one or two additions. In particular, its shallow draught, which allows it to sail in areas where large cruise ships cannot go—an important detail, the company says,  for travelers looking for new destinations and routes. In addition, public areas are being expanded with a swimming pool, gym, and internet café. The new vessel can accommodate 200 passengers and each of its 100 cabins will be ocean view.
The MS Belle de l’Adriatique will initially be stationed for departure from Dubrovnik in Croatia and will offer eight-day cruises as far as the Kotor estuary in Montenegro. To facilitate access at its point of origin, CroisiEurope will be setting up a charter connection from Paris, with a landing (or stopover) in a provincial city each week. In winter, the vessel will be deployed to Tenerife in the Canaries for cruises to Morocco. Website:

Peter Deilmann Cruises Go Smoke Free
Peter Deilmann Cruises is expanding the no- smoking restrictions on its European river fleet to include all areas inside the vessels without exception beginning in 2008. The policy will become effective at the start of the river cruise season in March 2008.
Peter Deilmann Cruises, which operates a fleet of nine river vessels, first extended the smoke-free areas on its ships in 2005 to include all cabins and corridors along with its no-smoking policy in the restaurants. Now smoking will only be permitted on the open decks. "We are happy to have our river ships smoke free. Over the years, more and more of our guests have indicated such preferences and we are absolutely delighted to offer them a smoke-free restaurant, a smoke-free lounge for evening entertainment and smoke-free cabins and corridors," Ron Santangelo, Deilmann's North America president, said in announcing the new policy. "Along with the best crew to passenger ratio, the attractive ambience of our traditional vessels, our highly rated continental cuisine and the exceptional quality of our service, this will be another good reason for American guests to sail with Peter Deilmann Cruises on the rivers of Europe," he added.
Deilmann Cruises offers more than 270 European river sailings each year ranging in length from seven-to-14 nights from late March through October (through mid-November in France) that bring passengers into the heart of Europe's cities, towns and villages. Seven of the eight ships in regular passenger service are rated five stars; one is rated four star and the ninth vessel operates charters.
Seven-night river cruises begin at $1,470, per person twin in the April, October and November value seasons. The 2007 Great Rivers of Europe brochures are currently available from travel agencies and Peter Deilmann Cruises and the 2008 brochure will be published in September. New ‘MS Swiss Sapphire’ To Debut On Europe’s Rivers In 2008
Tauck World Discovery has announced the name of its new luxury riverboat that will begin service next spring in Europe. The new ship will be called the MS Swiss Sapphire, and it will serve as the sister-ship to Tauck’s MS Swiss Emerald launched last year. According to Tauck’s president, Robin Tauck, the name perfectly captures the essence of the new build.  “Sapphires are dazzling, and this new ship will be as well,” said Tauck.  “The Sapphire’name reflects the elegance and sophistication that will characterize the ship, and “Swiss” speaks nicely to its European heritage.” The name also follows the convention of the other ships in Tauck’s riverboat fleet, the MS Swiss Emerald and MS Swiss Diamond.  All three ships are Swiss registry.
Construction of the Swiss Sapphire is proceeding on-schedule in the Netherlands, said Tauck, and the hull is scheduled to be launched and transported for additional construction and final outfitting beginning in late August.  The 361-foot ship will have two hot tubs, a bar and lounge, restaurant and wellness center.  A maximum of just 118 guests will be accommodated in 59 outside-facing staterooms, including 14 luxury suites with 300 square-feet of living space highlighted by floor-to-ceiling windows, walk-in closets and marble baths featuring full size tubs.  All cabins will have a plasma TV, mini-bar, radio, safe, individual air conditioning and L’Occitane toiletries.
River cruising has been among the fastest growing segments of Tauck’s diverse portfolio of travel experiences, which totals approximately 100 land and water-based itineraries in over 60 countries worldwide.  Sales of Tauck’s river cruising trips have grown by more than 50% in the past two years.  Tauck currently operates five river cruising itineraries in Europe, including a 24-day, transcontinental “Grand European Cruise” from Amsterdam to the Black Sea (from $7,530 plus air).  Tauck also has three additional programs in China and Egypt that each include a three-night river cruise component.

Deilmann Cruises Bans Smoking On  Its European River Ships In 2008
Peter Deilmann Cruises is expanding the no-smoking restrictions on its European river fleet to include all areas inside the vessels without exception beginning in 2008. The policy will become effective at the start of the river cruise season in March 2008, the cruise line announced today.
Peter Deilmann Cruises, which operates a fleet of nine river vessels, first extended the smoke-free areas on its ships in 2005 to include all cabins and corridors along with its no-smoking policy in the restaurants.  Now smoking will only be permitted on the open decks. “We are happy to have our river ships smoke free now that the laws in Europe are evolving to ban smoking indoors and we are adjusting our policy to reflect this shift in sentiment.  The changing attitude in Europe helps us please our American guests even more”, Ron Santangelo, Deilmann’s North America president, said in announcing the new policy.  “This change fits surprisingly well with the growing interests of the majority of Americans who seem to prefer non-smoking environments.  Over the years, more and more of our guests have indicated such preferences and we are absolutely delighted to offer them a smoke-free restaurant, a smoke-free lounge for evening entertainment and smoke-free cabins and corridors,” Santangelo said.
Deilmann Cruises offers more than 270 European river sailings each year ranging in length from seven to 14 nights from late March through October (through mid-November in France) that bring passengers into the heart of Europe’s cities, towns and villages.  Seven of the eight ships in regular passenger service are rated five stars; one is rated four star and the ninth vessel operates charters.
The 110-passenger Heidelberg sails seven-night cruises on the Rhine, Moselle and on Dutch and Belgian canals. The five-star vessel calls at Rhine cities and towns in four countries visiting Amsterdam, Cologne, Rüdesheim, Koblenz, Basel, Strasbourg and the wine towns of Bernkastel, Cochem and Trier on the smaller Moselle River. Ghent, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Bruges and Brussels are destinations on roundtrip sailings from Amsterdam.
The 96-passenger Casanova offers seven-night cruises on the Rhine, Moselle, Main-Danube Canal, Neckar and a 14-night grand cruise between Amsterdam and Budapest.  Casanova also has seven-night cruises on the Danube round-trip from Passau (just two hours from Munich). However, the 200-passenger Mozart sails the main program for Deilmann on the Danube, also round-trip from Passau.  Mozart has the largest cabins of any river vessel at 203 square feet and has two fixed suites at 406 square feet.  Both ships also offer 10- and 11-night Danube cruises from Passau to Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava and other cities and towns to the Black Sea in Romania.
The 100-passenger Cezanne sails weekly from Paris round-trip on the Seine on itineraries that feature an overnight stay on board in Paris.  She also offers sailings between Rouen and Paris.  Cruises call at towns and villages where the Impressionist painters lived and worked.  Also in France, Deilmann offers Rhône and Saône river cruises from Lyon round-trip on the 148-passenger Princesse de Provence to the Beaujolais, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Macon-Villages vineyards and the historic Provencal cities of Avignon and Arles.  Some voyages also operate between Arles and Lyon. The French cruises set sail through Nov. 10.
The Frederic Chopin and Katharina von Bora, both 79-passenger ships, sail alternately from Prague and Potsdam (Berlin) on seven-night cruises on the Vltava, Havel and Elbe rivers.  Lively Berlin and the Czech capital of Prague are the beginning and culmination of these voyages to historic places that include the Martin Luther town of Wittenberg, Meissen and beautifully restored Dresden.  The 106-passenger Dresden also cruises the Elbe, but sails instead between the Baltic Coast city of Hamburg and Dresden.

New Shore Excursions Offered On Yangtze River By Victoria Cruises
Rising water levels as a result of the Three Gorges Dam project on China’s magnificent Yangtze River have allowed Victoria Cruises to create shore excursions to once-hard-to-reach sites on the aptly nicknamed River of Heaven. “Since we began sailing in 1994, we’ve employed a dedicated team of individuals to craft shore excursions that encompass the unique attributes of the Yangtze including the Three Gorges, ancient historical sites and the smaller tributaries off the river,” said Larry Greenman, manager of public relations and customer service for Victoria Cruises. “As we move forward in the 21st century, we will continue to enhance our offerings with new excursions that emerge as a result of the Three Gorges Dam project and rising waters that provide access to sites not easily reached,” Greenman added.
Recent enhancements to shore excursions are as follows:
-- Shennong Stream – As a result of the Dam project, higher water levels have made it possible for visitors to travel further along Shennong Stream (a Yangtze tributary), which has become more navigable for a greater distance. Passengers board smaller “pea pod” wooden boats and take a relaxing ride through the attractive Gorges. The Shennong Stream region features a wild preserve, which is home to more than 1,000 types of trees.
-- Daning River/Small Gorges – Higher water levels have allowed Victoria Cruises to sail far enough on the Daning River, another Yangtze tributary, so travelers can see all three of the Gorges from a different perspective. Victoria Cruises now also uses larger and more comfortable motorized boats on the Daning River (holding approximately 130 passengers as opposed to boats once holding about 30 people).
-- A side trip of the Daning River excursion is a journey via sampan to the Ma Du River, a tributary of the Daning River. After boarding a sampan on the Daning River, travelers will embark on a 45-to-60-minute trip up the Ma Du River to the Mini Gorges (or Lesser Lesser Gorges), a picturesque area with clear, swift running water, unusual rock formations and monkeys and goats along the banks.
-- White Emperor City – White Emperor City (or Baidicheng), overlooking the Western end of Qutang Gorge, had been included as a shore excursion in the past but was discontinued because the climb up Baidi Mountain to the historical temple involved many steps. However, the water level on the Yangtze is expected to rise this season to 165 meters above sea level with the ongoing construction of the Three Gorges Dam, thereby greatly reducing the climb. Currently, White Emperor City is replacing the “ghost city” of Fendgu on select sailings, and if it is well-received by travelers, Victoria Cruises will look to include it on additional sailings.
White Emperor City has long been a refuge for would-be kings and poets who traveled there to be inspired by the breathtaking views. Legend has it that in 25 A.D., white vapor in the shape of a dragon rose from a well there, and Gong Sunshu, a soldier who had been headquartered there, declared himself the “White Emperor.” Remains of the city wall can be seen on the hill behind Baidi Mountain, and a temple built to commemorate Gong’s reign dates back more than 1,950 years.
Not all shore excursions are available on all itineraries. Excursion availability depends on the specific cruise booked as well as river conditions.
The Three Gorges will remain on Victoria Cruises’ Yangtze River itineraries as the Three Gorges Dam project, the largest engineering endeavor of its kind, moves toward completion in 2009. The Three Gorges Dam has become a highlight on all of Victoria’s cruise programs. “Many people are under the assumption that once the Dam and flooding are complete, the Three Gorges will disappear, but this is not true,” noted Greenman.
Water levels within the Three Gorges will rise as the project proceeds (markers along the river show how far the water level will rise) but Victoria Cruises’ vessels will continue sailing through the canyons and valleys that make-up this awe-inspiring wonder. “The Yangtze River will continue to be one of China’s most popular attractions, even when the Three Gorges Dam project is completed,” said Greenman. “The Three Gorges rise 1,000 meters above sea level, and in 2009, when the Dam project is finished, the water levels will rise to 175 meters leaving many spectacular vistas, mountain ridges, cloud-shrouded peaks and more amidst an extremely peaceful atmosphere for travelers to explore and appreciate,” he added.
