The Nautical Almanac brings together information on different aspects of the marine industry for both connoisseurs and neophytes and hopefully a little insight into a unique but fascinating world.

The language of the industry can often be confusing to a landlubber—just as if one were tackling a foreign language. The sea terms used on board ship are unique to common usage. And many a first-time cruiser is confounded by hearing such directional words as aft, stern, starboard and port in getting around the ship. So the Nautical Lexicon provides a reference source for that confusing shipboard talk.

In Nautical Notes, one learns of the many colloquialisms used daily and that these common sayings had their derivation centuries ago from the old seafarers.

Did you wonder how many different types of passenger vessels there are? Most of them are listed in Nautical Ships.

And like motorists, the navigator of a vessel has to obey the rules of the "road." Find out in Nautical Rules.

As shipsandcruises.com charts its course, other sections to the Almanac will be added. We welcome readers’ suggestions and they may email their ideas to ships@shipsandcruises.com
