Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad Expeditions Returns To South Pacific With National Geographic

Lindblad Expeditions, the company that pioneered travel to the South Pacific in the 1960s, returns to the region in 2006 with their renamed flagship, the National Geographic Endeavour. As part of the expedition travel company's alliance with National Geographic, guests sailing aboard the 110-passenger ship will have the opportunity to travel with renowned National Geographic scientists, explorers and adventurers in addition to Lindblad's core Expedition Leaders and Natural History team as they explore the remote beaches and atolls of the Cook Islands, Tahiti, Fiji, Easter Island and Papua New Guinea. Geneticist, anthropologist, and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Spencer Wells will join Lindblad Expeditions' journeys to the South Pacific this summer and share his work as director of National Geographic's Genographic Project, a five-year initiative to map the journey of humans as they populated the planet. Travelers aboard the National Geographic Endeavour with Wells will participate first-hand by submitting their own cheek swab sample prior to traveling. They will then have the unique opportunity to talk about their individual migratory histories with Spencer while onboard. "We see this as the moon shot of anthropology, using genetics to fill in the gaps in our knowledge of human history," said Wells. "This is an extraordinary opportunity to decipher that story, now in danger of being lost as people migrate and mix to a greater extent than they have in the past," he added.

Other National Geographic experts joining Lindblad's South Pacific voyages in 2006 include Writer and Adventurer Jon Bowermaster (April 16, May 4, October 13 departures); Anthropologist and Explorer-in-Residence, studying Polynesian navigation history, Wade Davis (August 10 departure); Underwater Photographer David Doubilet (August 26 and September 11 departures); and Marine Biologist and Filmmaker Soames Summerhays (September 22 and 30 departures).

The Genographic Project is aimed at analyzing DNA and genetic markers to trace ancient human migrations across the continents. Project Director Spencer Wells has analyzed the DNA of thousands of people living in isolated tribes around the world. His book, Journey of Man, chronicles his discovery that all humans can be traced back to a tribe of hunter-gatherers who lived in Africa 60,000 years ago. Wells will travel aboard the National Geographic Endeavour on the July 24 (Tahiti to Cook Islands) and July 30 (Cook Islands to Fiji) departures to talk about his work with travelers who have the opportunity to contribute to this real-time research project by submitting their own DNA samples.

Lindblad Expeditions was founded in 1979 and operates a fleet of six ships in regions such as Galapagos, Antarctica, Arctic Norway, Alaska and Baja California, to name a few, with a focus on responsible tourism. The company has been the recipient of many environmental awards including the United Nations Environmental Programme Global 500 Award. For more information, visit: www.expeditions.com.

Arabella Cruises

Arabella Cruises Offering Six-Night Cruise To Lesser Antilles In 2006

Arabella is offering a six-night itinerary to the Lesser Antilles—St. Barth's, St. Martin, & Anguilla. The itinerary is as follows:

-- Day 1: Arriving in St. Maarten, it is but a short drive along the calm lagoon of Simpson Bay to Marigot, where you'll be welcomed at a cozy bay front hotel. After a quick dip in the crystal clear waters of Marigot Bay, you'll have time to explore this charming blend of the Mediterranean and the Caribbean that is the hallmark of this island. Besides great shopping—the entire island is duty free—you can enjoy wonderful dining along the bistro-lined wharfs at Port Royale, just steps away, or take a short expedition to the beachfront scene at Grand Case, the gastronomic center of St. Maarten.

-- Day 2: After breakfast at your hotel, you'll be met mid-morning by Arabella's launch. Once welcomed aboard, sails are hoisted, off on a sparkling broach reach towards the beckoning shores of Anguilla. A member of the British Commonwealth, Anguilla is known for its exquisite hospitality and stunning beaches. Clearing into Road Bay, the vessel will drop anchor at Sandy Ground, a charming Caribbean outpost of Mother England. Once ashore trips to the day spas at Cuisin Art Resort or Malliouhana can be easily arranged, or a tour of the island's signature beaches with a stop at the Valley to purchase Anguilla crafts. For the water sports enthusiasts, Arabella will depart for a short sail to the Prickly Pear Cays, for an afternoon of snorkeling among the colorful coral reefs. Back at Sandy Ground by later afternoon, you can tour the Pyrat Rum Factory fed by natural springs behind Salt Pond.

-- Day 3: Breakfast will be served while Arabella shift’s anchorage to Crocus Bay, for a morning snorkeling expedition before hoisting sail to proceed to a lunch spot off Scrub Island. Once clear of Windward Point and Scrub Island, the ship is southward bound for St. Barth's - the green peaks off of Monrne de Vitet just visible on the horizon.

-- Day 4: Awakening amongst the megayachts off Gustavia, savor breakfast at anchor off Corossal Beach then off to the anchorage at Columbier Bay. Launch service is also available to Gustavia during the day from where arrangements can be made for sportfishing or diving excursions, or a private tour of the island. In the evening there’s a wonderful dinner in a building that was built in Bali.

-- Day 5: This morning guests have the option to stay ashore and soak up the local scene or join Arabella as she sets sail for Ile Fourche, an uninhabited isle that is part of the St. Barth's Marine Reserve. Once anchored in this pleasant bay, guests can kayak along the grottos lining the shore, or hike inland. Snorkeling here is excellent - not only reef fish, but also rays and sea turtles can be seen along the vibrant reef ecosystem.

-- Day 6: Today  Arabella anchors off one of the glorious beaches St. Barth's is known for, such as Grande Saline, Lorient, or Flamands. Tonight Arabella anchors in Bay St. Jean for a farewell party close to the Nikki Beach Club where you can retire to for after-dinner entertainment at this famous nightspot.

-- Day 7: The final voyage will bring the ship into the harbor at Simpson's Bay, St. Maarten.

This is a sample itinerary.  All stops are subject to the captain’s discretion and may vary due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. Website: http://www.cruisearabella.com/ for information on other cruises and itineraries.

Clipper Cruise Line

Clipper Designs Series Of War-Themed Cruises

With the baby boomer generation seeking travel opportunities that explore their family histories, award-winning small-ship operator Clipper Cruise Line has designed a series of military-themed cruises that honor the accomplishments and struggles of those involved in World War II and the Vietnam War. The 122-passenger Clipper Adventurer will carry passengers to significant battle sites along the Mediterranean and Western European coast; while the 128-passenger Clipper Odyssey will feature Vietnam and the islands of the South Pacific.  Clipper and its operational partners will employ a number of distinguished guest lecturers to provide further detail — through in-depth lectures, informal discussions, and guided excursions — on the historic events that occurred at these sites. “Our staff has worked closely with a number of military history experts in designing these Clipper Cruise Line voyages so that they may provide further insight into the people and events that turned the tides of these campaigns,” CEO David Drier said.  “We introduced this theme in 2004 with our cruise along the Normandy coast to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the D-Day invasion and furthered our efforts by adding an exploration of the Solomon Islands in March 2005.  Each was so well received by military groups, history buffs, and families of veterans — ships departing with full passenger loads and returning to rave reviews — that we’ve decided to introduce a full complement of military-themed journeys aboard the Clipper Adventurer and Clipper Odyssey in 2006 and beyond.”

These itineraries were selected because of their prominent roles in determining the outcome of these legendary conflicts.  Among the sites passengers will call upon in the Solomon Islands are Guadalcanal (the largest island in the group that saw six months of ferocious fighting), Plum Pudding (where John F. Kennedy and his shipmates swam ashore after the sinking of PT 109), Vella Lavella (home to the famed Marine Corps pilots nicknamed the “Black Sheep Squadron”), and Rabaul (featuring miles of underground tunnels and bunkers used for protection).  In the Mediterranean, guests will learn about Operation HUSKY (the Allied effort to overtake Sicily that was the largest amphibious operation in World War II) and follow the path to Rome used by the Fifth, Seventh, and Eighth Armies.  Along Europe’s Atlantic coast, they’ll pay tribute to the D-Day landmarks by visiting the German U-boat pens at La Pallice, the Patton Monument at Avranches, the landing beaches (scheduled on June 6!), the Pegasus Bridge near Caen, and the Cabinet War Rooms in London.  Excursions on the Vietnam cruise will explore Hanoi, the underground tunnel complexes at Vinh Moc and Cu Chi, the Citadel in Hue, Da Nang, Khe Sanh, and Ho Chi Minh City.

-- The first trip planned in the 2006 series is the World War II South Pacific Campaign, which follows the route of the Allied forces in their effort to overtake the Japanese stronghold on the region.  Beginning in Sydney, Australia, and continuing through the Solomon Islands to Guam, guests will discover the remnants from the fighting and reflect upon the struggle.  Joining passengers on this 16-day adventure aboard the Clipper Odyssey is Dave McComb, who specializes in the role of American destroyers in World War II.  The cruise departs March 30, 2006, with rates beginning at $7,750 per person, double occupancy.

-- Beginning in Valletta, Malta, and ending in Rome, the Clipper Adventurer’s new World War II Italian Campaign spends 10 days following the footsteps of the Allied forces along the Sicilian and Italian coasts.  Led by Dr. Kevin McCranie (a leader in the field of 20th-century European history) and renowned Civil War and World War II expert Edward Bearss (of History America Tours), the cruise visits Gela, Siracusa, and Messina, Sicily; and Salerno, Gaeta, Cassino, and Anzio, Italy, to highlight the efforts of General George Patton’s Seventh Army and General Sir Harold Alexander’s British forces.  The cruise departs May 17, 2006, with rates beginning at $3,930 per person, double occupancy.

-- The Tides of War – From the Spanish Civil War to the Shores of Normandy & England voyage aboard the Clipper Adventurer travels from Lisbon, Portugal, to London.  In Portugal and Spain, guests will learn of the events leading to the Spanish Civil War and the rise of fascism along the Iberian Peninsula.  Then, the ship heads north to present the tremendous planning and effort needed to undertake the D-Day invasion into Normandy — with a special visit planned to the landing beaches on the 62nd anniversary of the battle.  Also led by Dr. McCranie, the 15-day journey concludes in Portsmouth (for its D-Day Museum) and London (including a visit to Churchill’s Cabinet War Rooms).  The cruise departs May 29, 2006, with rates beginning at $6,450 per person, double occupancy.

The final military cruise planned for 2006, Return of the Gunfighters – Cruise to Vietnam, is another new voyage that focuses on the Vietnam War.  Traveling from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City along the beautiful coastline, guests will enjoy luxurious amenities and an intimate setting aboard the Clipper Odyssey.  Led by Major General James Livingston — the Operations Officer for the evacuation of Saigon in 1975 who earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for his efforts in liberating the village of Dai Do — guests will gain a firsthand perspective of the American soldiers who fought in this 10-year conflict occupancy.

Along with a return of the Italian, South Pacific, and Vietnam cruises, Clipper will introduce several other military-themed adventures in 2007.  Cruises aboard the Clipper Odyssey will include the World War II Philippine Campaign and the World War II Rise and Fall of Japan voyages in April.  Aboard the Clipper Adventurer, Clipper has added a World War II North Africa Campaign – Chasing the Desert Fox cruise to Morocco, Gibraltar, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya that will depart in September.

Rates on each of these military-themed cruises include deluxe accommodations in all-outside cabins aboard the ship, all shipboard meals, sightseeing and shore excursions, transportation and additional accommodations per the itinerary, discussions and shore excursions led by distinguished guest experts, and the services of Clipper’s hospitality staff.  In addition, gratuities and port charges are included in the rates for all cruises aboard the Clipper Adventurer and Clipper Odyssey.

Those booking the cruise through History Travel will be privy to an exclusive, Thomas-hosted screening of the new program “Save Our History: Alaska’s Aleutian Islands” which delves into a little-known conflict crucial to the outcome of WWII.  Additional Thomas-hosted events include a welcome aboard cocktail party, personal reflections from Thomas about his family history in Alaska, and an afternoon discussion on historic home restoration.

The seven-night Explore Alaska cruise, features port calls including Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and Victoria and scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park and Alaska’s Inside Passage.  The day-by-day itinerary includes:

-- Days 1 & 2: Seattle, Washington.  Tour Begins. The tour begins with an overnight stay in one of America’s most picturesque cities, Seattle. On day 2, spend the morning at your leisure, experiencing this great city known for its stunning waterfront.  "Catch" a salmon at historic Pike Place Market, ride to the top of the Space Needle, or sample a cup of java in the coffee capital of the world. Later today, board Holland America’s ms Zaandam to begin your 7-night cruise.  Tonight, join host Steve Thomas for an exclusive "welcome aboard" cocktail reception.

-- Day 3: At Sea. Enjoy a special presentation by Thomas.  Then take advantage of the many amenities on your ship or just relax and enjoy the majestic scenery from one of the many decks.

-- Day 4: Juneau. Join Steve for a screening of “Save Our History: Alaska’s Aleutian Islands,” to learn about a little-known conflict crucial to the outcome of WWII. Then, arrive in Alaska’s lively capital, the beautiful city of Juneau.  Take some time to discover this splendid area, which includes Alaska’s oldest Russian Orthodox church, St. Nicolas, or visit the famed Mendenhall Glacier.

-- Day 5: Glacier Bay. Today the ship cruises into stunning Glacier Bay National Park accompanied by a U.S. park ranger and Huna Totem native speaker. Here, passengers can travel back in time to the Ice Age to see the faces of glaciers whose retreat over just two centuries has sculpted a 65-mile long fjord.

-- Day 6: Sitka. Today’s port of call is the seaside town of Sitka, which possesses a unique heritage including Native American and Russian culture.  Sitka is the land of the Tlingit Indian nation - keep an eye out for the great collection of carved totem poles - and was once home to the Russian fur trade empire that began in 1799.  Sitka is also the site of the national park commemorating the official transfer of Alaska to the US from the Russians in 1867 at a cost of $7.2 million. Scoffed at in its day as “Seward’s Folly”, the investment in the natural resources-rich territory turned out to be the best deal since the Louisiana Purchase.

-- Day 7: Ketcham.  Located on tranquil Revillagigedo Island, Ketchikan is home to the world’s largest collection of totem poles.  With some free time, you may choose to visit Totem Bight Park or Saxman Indian Village to see these tremendous timbers being carved.  Later this afternoon, History Travelers will join Steve for a discussion of historic home restoration.

-- Day 8: British Columbia. A wonderful day of cruising is in store as the ms Zaandam sails south. At the end of the day, the ship calls at Victoria, the capital of British Columbia.  Guests have the opportunity to explore this charming city by night.  A crown colony since 1849, charming Victoria proudly displays her British heritage.

-- Day 9: Seattle, Washington. Disembarkation.
