mountains, glaciers and the original trail of 1898.

historic sites, glacier views and seasonal highlights
such as spawning salmon as well as an exclusive unforgettable

Channel Islands.

NCV Offers New Theme Programs Highlight Norway’s Culture And
History
Three new theme programs
highlighting specific aspects of Norwegian culture
and history are being offered on several northbound
Coastal Odyssey departures in April, May, August and
September.
-- Norwegian Life and Heritage
introduces passengers to the history and tradition
of the Norwegian people. Lectures by Dr. Fenella
Bazin, retired director of post-graduate studies at
the Centre for Manx Studies, address the geography,
wildlife and history of Norway's dramatic coastline.
-- Norwegian Maritime Traditions
focuses on the crucial impact of the maritime industry
on Norway and the region since man first took to these
seas. Professor Bard Kolltveit, director of
research at the Norwegian Maritime Museum in Oslo,
happily passes on his knowledge and enthusiasm to
the passengers.
-- The Life, Work and Music
of Edvard Grieg, a name synonymous with Norway, is
a program celebrating the life of the 19th-century
composer. Daily recitals are even more impressive
when played to the passing scenery of the Norwegian
coastline. Rune Alver is an accomplished pianist,
giving concerts in throughout Europe; lecturer Eilif
Løtveit has been connected with the Grieg estate for
35 years and has a background in languages, history
and the arts. Prices of these seven-to nine-day

programs: booking by April 1, 2006 saves $300 per
person on the 19-day Antarctica Expedition Voyage,
and $100 per person on three Special Interest Programs—11-day
Lofoten Islands and Western Fjords and ten-day Fjords

and $150 to $200 off “Spitsbergen Expeditions” (February
15).
Designed for active, experienced
travelers, the 19-day Antarctica sailings, departing
Buenos Aires and Santiago, November 2006 through March
2007, on the MS Nordkapp and the MS Nordnorge,
both rated Ice Class C, has added a fifth day of exploration
in Antarctica with new possible landings, weather

northern coast; 11-day Lofoten Islands, highlights
the island’s stunning scenery and picturesque fishing
villages; and 11-day Western Fjords, focuses on Norway’s
most beautiful fjord region along its west coast.
These trips add hiking, fishing trips and lectures
to enhance daily excursions to well-known and remote
destinations. The voyages from Bodo or Bergen, May–Aug.
2006, are normally $3,230 to $5,025 per person, double.

Swedish capital, and Gothenburg, the major port, journey
through lush countryside on three canals with 66 locks,
eight lakes, a river and two seas on NCV’s seven-

Princess Makes Marriage Proposals Memorable With
'Engagement Under the Stars' Package
Where else should suitors turn for help in creating
a "stellar" marriage proposal than Princess
Cruises, famous as the romantic setting of "The
Love Boat" television series? Beginning in June
2006, with the launch of the line's newest ship, Crown
Princess, a new "Engagement Under the Stars"
package will offer the opportunity for a couple to
enjoy movie-star status when they agree to tie the
knot. Men can pop the question to their unsuspecting
betrothed with a personal video proposal shown on
the ship's giant outdoor Movies Under the Stars movie
screen and, after she says "yes," Princess
will continue to keep the stars in their eyes throughout
the sailing with a special romantic dinner, amenities,
and the creation of keepsake items to remember the
occasion long after they return home.
"Engagement Under the Stars" proposals
will take place just prior to one of the evening's
outdoor feature films at a time prearranged with the

Royal Caribbean And Celebrity Introduce Remote
Luggage Check-In Service
Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises’
guests can now complete the dreaded airline and luggage
check-in process for their flights home even before
they step off the ship. The new service enables guests
to bypass the traditional airport
check-in process, adding convenience and reducing
wait time by an estimated 45 minutes to two hours.
The service is being rolled out at ports across the
United States, based on approval by the U.S. Transportation
Security Administration, Customs and Border Patrol,
as well as seaport, airport and airline security personnel.
Called “Onboard Check-in and Luggage Valet,” the
service is now available to Celebrity Cruises’ guests
whose cruises conclude in Fort
Lauderdale, Fla.; Miami; San Diego; San Juan, Puerto
Rico; and Seattle. The service is available for Royal
Caribbean guests whose cruises end in San Juan and
Seattle. Both brands also offer the service for arrivals
in Vancouver, British Columbia. To qualify, guests
must fly to a U.S. city on an expanding list of airlines
on the same day their cruise ends.
Before leaving the ship, guests confirm with cruise
staff their flight information and the number of bags
to be checked. Based on that information – which also
is electronically forwarded to the airlines –boarding
passes, luggage tags and claim checks are printed
and given to guests. Guests with afternoon flights
can take advantage of shopping or city tours before
going to the airport directly to security checkpoints
and on to their gates and flights. While guests take
in the sites, their
luggage is securely transported to the airport, processed
and moved directly to their aircraft. There is a nominal
fee for the service, ranging from $10 to $20 per guest,
which varies by port and service offering.
The service was first piloted at the port of Vancouver
during the 2003 Alaska cruise season. The 10-week
test program involved two airlines and approximately
2,000 guests. In 2004 and 2005, the Vancouver service
was expanded to include eight airlines and about 52,000
guests. Up to 75 percent of eligible guests used the
service, averaging more than 500 guests per sailing
and nearly 65,000 pieces of luggage this year. Websites:

‘Minerva II’ To Sail Around South America
Swan Hellenic will make its first extended cruise
in January 2007, when its floating country house-style
Minerva II sails round-trip from Barbados on January
4 on a 65-day South America circle cruise, including
stops in 34 ports in Ecuador, Peru, Argentina and
Brazil. The cruise is a response to the success of
the line's shorter itineraries and the popularity
of the region. The cruise will also offer a four-day
supplementary tour through the Incan world of Machu
Picchu.
Ports of call and highlights en route will include:
the cosmopolitan cities of Buenos Aires and Rio; Port
Stanley in the Falklands; West Point Island, to explore
the cliffs, home to the Rockhopper penguins and black-browned
albatross; the Panama Canal, where guests can explore
the surrounding jungle; Isle Royale, a former prison
for political dissenters; and Puerto Madryn, founded
in 1886 by Welsh settlers.
More than 20 expert guest speakers will entertain
and educate the guests including Major General Julian
Thompson, who served 34 years in Britain's Royal Marines
and commanded the 3rd Commando Brigade during the
1982 Falklands War.
Swan Hellenic is currently offering 49 percent off
the brochure fare with rates starting at US$16,245
for a standard outside cabin; rates are for double
occupancy and include a choice of excursions at every
port, tips and port taxes. Website: www.swanhellenic.com
