In 2006, there will be three cruises between the US West Coast and Hawaii. Ship History: Pride had a past before she was formally christened. Her history begins in the late 1990s at the Pascagoula Mississippi shipyard where she was originally being built. Started by the now defunct American Classic Voyages in 1999, which went bankrupt in post 9/11 2001, the ship languished until in 2002 when NCL purchased the partially completed ship from the US Maritime Administration and had the vessel towed to the Lloyd Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven. Just three months before the ship’s completion in 2004—she was slated to be the first US-flagged ship sailing in Hawaii— a violent storm partially sank the vessel at dockside in January. Sea water flooded the bottom three decks but spared the passenger decks, which were still above water. After several weeks of preparation, the seawater was pumped from the ship, and she was refloated. However some of the work had to be redone. Then the Lloyd Werft shipyard declared itself insolvent, further complicating repairs and completion of the vessel. Ultimately, the shipyard got through its difficult period. The ship’s mishap and the shipyard problems added more than a year to the construction process. Finally, this May, the completed ship was delivered to NCL America. Website: www.ncl.com |
