The ship has an innovative propulsion plant based on two diesel electric
ABB azipod units providing a cruising speed of 21 knots. The ship is vibration
free but in choppy waters, one does feel some sway.
The ship has its ISPS certificate and is equipped with the latest navigational
equipment and environmental and safety protections systems.
Refuse is sorted, glass and metal recycled for later recycling on shore,
and the remaining refuse is incinerated in an environment-friendly unit.
All sewage is biologically treated.
Captain Hagen Damaschke was appointed Master of the Europa in early 2003. Prior to his appointment he was appointed Staff Captain in 1998 and worked on board all four Hapag-Lloyd ships—Europa, Hanseatic, Bremen and C. Columbus. The 41-year-old captain currently resides in Berlin where in his spare time he enjoys surfing and winter skiing.
Prices for a 14-day bilingual cruise range from 4,060 euros per person for a standard balconied suite to 8,000 euros for the ten Penthouse deluxe suites. Air fare is additional and usually factored into the cruise rate.
